Clifton, that's quality, mate

That first pic, you look like you unrolled the flag and, just off camera, there's security coming for you or something - "Quick! Take it!! Take it now!"

Everyone copies Arsenal with regards to numbers on their shirts?

What's that all about then?

Never heard that before, were they the first to sport numbers?

Herbert chapman- successful arsenal manager before the war was the first guy to introduce numbers on football shirts.. Others followed suit..

.. Incidentally he played a large chunk of his career for spurs in v.early part of last century and also died of pneumonia when serving as arsenal manager..

.. Spurs and he knows it

Chapman was also responsible for the white sleeves on goon shirts. They claim it was to help players find each other on the pitch (as we know gooners are particularly dense and need all the help they can get) but we know better.

Yiddo!

Probably the best quality first three posts in our history. Absolutely brilliant photos and well deserving of the rep.

Another good'un that I always enjoy reading about and can never remember the details (and am too lazy to do so on wikipedia) is the beginnings of the north london derby..what with them moving from woolwich etc, adopting our style of play etc, but something to do with us getting relegated but most of the sides who should have been promoted not having decent enough stadiums or floodlights or something, and 5th or 6th place arsenal coming up due to bunging the FA? That near it at all?

Can anyone fill in the gaps?..

..same guy also tried to merge arsenal and fulham!

The first football teams to wear numbers were in Australia, beginning in 1911.
Once again, Goons copying a good idea and claiming they invented it.

The 1st Division was to be expanded by 2 teams after the 1st World War, the two teams were to be chosen by representatives of the other clubs in the league. Us and Chelsea were in the relegation spots at the end of the season, somehow* it worked out that we were relegated and Arsenal (who finished 6th in the 2nd Div) came up in our place with Chelsea retaining their status in the top league.

*It is pretty well know (although never proven) that the Arsenal chairman of the time, Henry Norris, dropped a few 'insentives' around the league clubs in order to ensure that Arsenal got the spot at the top table at our expense.
