If Levy had not been so miserly about trying to get the last penny out of the proposed transfers of the likes of Bentley and Keane he could have sold them for much more than what he'll get in the coming summer and would have saved quite a bit on wages too.

We were aware of what it would take to buy him. Our guys went and spok to Ajax, but for the money Harry believed it would be better spent elsewhere. This being because he saw him as too similar to vdv!

The mind boggles.

Cheers for clarifying that though, ryan.

Where do people get the Defoe thing from? He said he's too similar to VDV and that he wanted a striker to "lead the line" whether he's wrong or not, he didn't say anything about Defoe.

Even if it wasn't Defoe but VDV he compared him too, it was a poor analogy and a poor decision. Yes we need a striker to lead the line who's better than Crouch, but we also need an out and out striker who's better than Defoe, Pav and Keane. And Suarez was that.

It was a good analogy, I think. Suarez is not a box player. He runs the channels, comes deep, links play etc. We need a player who will make runs into the opposition box and scores goals with clever movement and positioning. Suarez is more of a link man.

Suarez is all about movement and positioning, he's literally brillant at that aspect.

He led the Liverpool line on Monday night to perfection, defending from the front, chasing lost causes....and his movement and quality was frightening.

More than capable of leading the line if ball is kept on the deck.

You people are crazy.

We all know this is all Jenas' fault!

Do we really need to search for a scapegoat? Why is everyone so quick to want someone fired? This was not a bad season at all, lets keep Harry and Levy and see where we go next season...Or is that too boring, too consistent??

I too blame Jermaine Jenas...it's always a handy default to fall back on in SC:wink:

I dont see anywhere that Harry says Modric was running on empty.

Of course you wouldn't.

Starting line up on the day-

19 Bassong
20 Dawson
32 Assou-Ekotto
07 Lennon
11 Van der Vaart
14 Modric
30 Sandro
40 Pienaar
18 Defoe

I can lead you to water.

one or two out of

BAE, Lennon, VDV and Modrc

for me it was Lennon and VDV that looked off the pace then, not Modric

Modric has been visibly tired quite often this season. But if people can't see it or won't admit it, there's not a lot I can do about it.

Were any of them "running on empty" halfway through this season?

Bale looked physically and mentally exhausted at the end of the Inter game (at WHL) - I said it at the time. Don't think we ever saw the same player again.

VDV frequently looked like he was running on empty. I saw him blowing after 25 minutes in one game.

Seen as we were relying on these two for goals, thanks to our misfiring front-line, that was IMHo an important factor in our decline.

On topic: I think Levy/Collectively missed a trick in the Summer, with thinking along the lines that we should wait and see how we did in the CL before splashing big money/wages on a striker who expected regular CL (and would most likey sulk/want off agian without it). Which is fair enough as done of us (NO-ONE) knew just how misfiring our strikers, who had after all fired us to a CL spot the seaosn before, would be. Having lit the tournament up :)dance:), I believe Levy/Redknapp, collectively, underestimated the difficulty of getting a top striker into the Lane in January. In fact, I believe they imagined the best young strikers in World football would be forming an orderly queue leading out of Spurs Lodge, competing for the chance to join. Which is fair enough, as I did too. It was a massive mistake - I felt at the time that we should have snapped the Suarez option up.

"He’s still a youngster. He’s running on empty. I’ve got to protect him a bit."

Harry Redknapp speaking about Gareth Bale on 23/09/10.

Bizarre.

I think Harry was indecisive. Never mind all this talk about Suarez. He could have had Rossi for £18m last summer. He said so. As I said elsewhere, that's a hanging offence.

"But other than that I couldn't put my life on a striker who we could have took. Andy Carroll was a gamble. I think he could be a huge success but he is not going to be fit for a while. We thought the quality Phil Neville has as a character might have been as important as bringing in a striker."
