Shop window IMO.

Neither are on the same level as the most promising of their peers (Caulker, Rose, Townsend and Carroll).

As Kalim says with injuries etc maybe Mason levelled out but I saw him a few years ago and looked the best of the bunch imo

Your wrong mate

It's about seeing how the players progress at a new level.

We don't really do "shop window" with the younger players. More often then not if they don't make the grade then they are released

Totally agree both will make it IF they carry on progressing as expected

Shocking how many people have written off a 18 year old, even when first team players haven't performed in the same games

the worst was when someone said he was league 1 quality at best when he has already proven himself in league 1:grin:

Fair enough.

Isn't it strange sending two players who play in the same position (sort of #10s) to the same club?

Nah, I think Kane would be playing up top with Mason off him,

Or possibly Mason deeper, and Kane as a no. 10

Well Mason used to be a 10 for the youth team but at Yeovil he was one of a midfield 2 and at Doncaster he played as often on the wing as he did centrally. Very versatile player.

And Kane was more of a poacher than a 10 at Leyton Orient. So I don't see why they can't play in the same team. Hopefully they both have plenty of game time.

Maybe they've gone as a partnership, not a bad idea if thats the case.

That kind of thing IS more widely accepted in society these days, but I don't think the Millwall fans would be too welcoming.

True story, the sort of value these players are current worth and will be worth if they fail to make the grade with us are relatively insignificant (to us anyway)

This sort of loan move is to allow them the opportunity to prove themselves in a competitive environment and to try and aid their progression.

I would assume that if we did not think they at least had some potential we would simply release them (as we don't actually need to hold a bloated squad of youth players)

Good luck to the guys, I think the loan system is essential to any young player who wants to get into a competitive first team like ours. Walker has shown how the break through is possible but the chances of success is still slim of course and perhaps the likes of Kane and Mason are further down the pecking order now than Townsend and players who have already impressed on loan and made more of an impact with us.

Exactly

You need to go out and establish yourself. It's also a test of character as well as nurturing obvious ability!

I dunno, impressing on loan helps certainly but I dont think its the be-all and end-all, I think its probably more important to train well and then take your (possibly only) chance in the team if it comes your way. Livermore and Rose didnt pull up any trees on loan but have forced their way into the first team squad.

I hope Kane has a good spell. He has a decent touch, is a big strong boy and has gotten into good positions. I'm looking for his confidence to improve.

But Harry has said if these players cant play consistently for the lower league teams that they go to what chance have they got in making it into the team at Spurs?

It's true that Livermore nor Rose did well while out on their loans for giving reasons but I think Rose only got his chance through injury to Benny and Jake had a impressive preseason. Sometimes you get a bit of luck like these two have but I agree with Harry that these players need to prove that they're a level above the Championship to get a chance in our team on a regular basis.

A player can train well and all that but getting first team experience at an age that these two are at right now is very important to their development.

Rose got his chance because he played well in cup competitions for us.

From the OS

"Danny had to bide his time for his next appearance but took full advantage of a switch to left-back following injuries to Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Gareth Bale at the end of the 2010-11 campaign."

I cant recall him doing much for us in the FA Cup.......

I don't think you have to be world-class on loan to succeed (eg. Cleverly). I think that you can be unlucky on your loans and unable to get game time, but that's not the end of your career here if you show the right mentality and possess enough talent.

Loans are just a good way to get a feel for real competition, since we can't give youngsters that chance at Spurs atm. You could see it as developing your own players at other clubs for little cost, the way Walker benefited from Villa and Sturridge/Wilshere from Bolton - a great chance to learn the ropes without the pressure of a top four challenge. However, I suspect that more often than not a player doesn't so much develop his football as learn how to handle real pressure for the first time.

But even if you do everything well, you would still have to be very, very lucky with injuries to get into our first team because Harry doesn't rotate. Rose did well in putting himself in prime position once the opportunity did arise, but he couldn't have forced that opportunity on his own.

In any case I'd rather see our players getting actual game time than just kicking about in training, so long as we pick the right clubs and carefully monitor their progress.

Real tests for the lads - Mason needs to get fit and keep fit if he is to become anything. He has the talent but its no good if you play one game in three.

As for Kane this will be a step up for him and might just be a step too far in my opinion. He needs to be playing regularly, but I don't think Millwall are in a position to give him time to acclimatise. That said, he could turn up and rip the place up. Would be nice to see both of them do well at this level

I said in another thread about Mason, if the Club's fitness and conditioning coach can't help him develop his strength maybe they should send Mason over to see that French fitness guru who Defoe used last summer. Better still, maybe the Club should just offer the guy a huge consultancy fee to come over and assess and improve our whole fitness regime.

Good luck to them, although as they both play in similar positions (Mason maybe a little bit deeper) was it wise to send them to the same club?

"Both are attacking players. Harry (Kane) is a goalscorer and Ryan (Mason) is a very creative player with experience of playing in the Championship for Doncaster. I do think that our goalscoring options, which do need to improve, will be helped by the acquisition of these two players."

http://www.millwallfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10367~2560338,00.html

IMO Kane has been playing as a no 9 or 10, whereas Mason who used to play as a no 10 for Spurs youth, seems to have dropped to playing deeper for both Doncaster (where he also played a few games as a winger) and Yeovil, so they are not necessarily competing for the same spot at Millwall.

I am sure Sherwood (who I think looks after loanees for Spurs) would have checked out Millwall's intentions to play both players, as it is not in Spurs interests for them not to play - Spurs have cancelled loans before where the player has not been getting enough game time.
