Ok so I'm very ill and can't sleep so I decided, for anyone who may be interested, to have a look at how many points we've won under Harry Redknapp, comparing the first half of the season to the second to see just how bad (or not) a collapse we're experiencing currently and how well we perform at the back end of the season.

2008/09 Season (30 games under HR)

1st 15: 1.46ppg
2nd 15: 1.93ppg
+0.53ppg

2009/10 Season (38 games)

1st 19: 1.78ppg
2nd 19: 1.89ppg
+0.12ppg

2010/11 Season (38 games)

1st 19: 1.73ppg
2nd 19: 1.52ppg
-0.21ppg

2011/12 Season (33 games so far)

1st 19: 2.21ppg
2nd 14: 1.21ppg
-1.00ppg

Even if we win our next 5 games, our ppg for the second half of the season will be 1.68, still a loss of 0.53ppg. It's unlikely we will win all of our remaining games this season.

Apologies if any of the numbers are wrong, it's getting late and I'm very sweaty now. Hope it interests some of you. I wasn't trying to make any specific point, just offer some numbers for you to make what you will of.

Thanks for posting - hope you are better soon !

Agreed the decline in 2nd half of the season is alarming - and worse than last season. What I find extraordinary is in 2009/10 that we were marginally better in the second half of the season versus the first half - possibly because we realised in the second half that we were close to a CL place - maybe HR's powers of persuation have been diminishing ?

Football is a game of many factors so I certainly don't think this is the ultimate reason, far from it, but the last 2 seasons we've run out of steam and I think something to do with this is due to our players being overplayed and us not making best use of our squad.

I made this point the other day (and I forgot to respond to A&C actually about this issue so I'll do it here), I think that the effects can be marginal in some cases, just sap that bit of sharpness here and there (Walker/Parker/Modric) and sometimes cause injuries, Kaboul for example. The figure I came out with is that we have 7 players who have played 29+ Premier games more than any other team, now a cursory look at other teams shows the difference to be not that great, but football is a game of fine lines. In 09/10 when we snagged 4th it is worth pointing out that the second half of the season saw Pav come in from the cold and put in a few performances, we saw the resurgence of Gareth Bale, David Bentley came in from the cold and looked passably like a footballer. A glance at our appearance stats show in that particular season game time was noticeably more spread around the squad, this and last season, that has changed and we are relying on the same faces as the core of the side. Sandro was possibly our best performer in the latter half of the season, it must have helped that he had that extra bit of gas in the tank.

Now as I said this is not the sole reason, there are so many factors that affect success and failure in football - I think our slump can this season (and last) be attributed to Redders tactics on some occasions, his coaching ethos etc which has been done time and again, but early season we were picking up points with those same tactics - a slightly sharper squad - mentally and physically - means we get to those balls that bit quicker.

It's about the aggregation of small margins, and I think Redknapp should really be using the squad better to push that margin in our favour. Players like Charlie, Pienaar, Bassong would be a godsend right now. I just hope Harry can coax a final push out of them for the final 5 games and get back into the Champions League, I think it could have been a whole lot easier.

Blame all our woes on the F.A. and the accompanying media circus surrounding the departure of the Italian.
