If we really are in the market for a new cb, it looks that way, doesn't it?

Sorry, John, I was being facetious

But, yeah, it pretty much does...either this year or the next.

Having championed the kid against a barracking from the vast majority during his first stint at the Lane, I still believe we should be looking to Kaboul as part of our long-term solution. Would like to keep Dawson as an exuberant option - not personally convinced he will be a top 4 level 1st choice. I know Caulker is highly fancied on here, but still too early, really. And that leaves Bassong, and if he wants out, either this year or the next, we are gonna need a 4th option. maybe now is a good time to bite the bullet:shrug:

I would like it if Harry had more faith in Kaboul, too, SP. I rate him highly. And of course I would also like it if I I saw less of Dawson.

I wish people would give our players a chance. I think Defoe has looked one of our sharpest players in pre-season. I really think he can hit the ground running this season. A couple of goals in pre-season can only lift his confidence.

He may not be the answer to our striker needs, but he's good enough to play a rolethis season.

I don't think that's true. I'm sure every side below Liverpool would take him, it's just we're failing/have failed in our pursuit of replacements.

I think this is correct...there is too much labelling our players as crap, when they are just not quite at the level we are aiming for - which is very high.

My first and lasting thought is Harry is trying to get the best out of a player he has known since he was 14 years old. Get Harry out

"...but my assistant Joe Jordan managed the club for three years so he knows about them."

Anyone else think this was a bit of random waffling and a bit bizarre? How long ago did he manage them for goodness sake?

ok imagine you are J defoe.

what would you want to do.

Stay with a top six side knowing the other five are not interested in you.

or go to who?

who could afford you and who in the PL would you go to.

realistically if i was JD i would stay where i was. he can refuse to go anywhere.

go abroad maybe but again who and where.

IMHO he will be part of our strike force this season. JD pav and two others

ok, where is Defoe going to play this big role?

He either plays up front on his own or you have to drop VDV or Lennon to make room for him in a 4-4-2. He has no presence/threat/impact to play on his own and I wouldn't drop one of our best players (from our stacked midfiedld) to play someone who's going to flit around the edge of the game and then perhaps nick a goal.

Defoe could still do well at say Fulham (replacing Johnson) or Newcastle/Sunderland (who can afford to drop up a journeyman in exchange for some goals) but I don't see how he fits in our side at all anymore and I'd sell before Pav or Crouch, who have some uses as subs and backups. Kranjcar could do everything Defoe can as a striker, with better passing!

That's actually the problem. (As a sidenote, his passing's very accurate.) I've never been a great fan as he's consistently flattered to deceive, but to be fair a striker who has failed to get into double figures just twice in the past eight or nine seasons can hardly be that bad, either. If Harry has a somewhat rose-tinted view of him it's hardly surprising.

But where have all these Defoe-bashers come from? A couple of years ago the mildest criticism incurred a volley of outraged abuse. And where are the JDFC who were wont to lambast me for supporting Jol when he suggested that Defoe might chip in with a goal or two now and then?

Nobody wants our waste of space strikers. I mean we can't even shift Keane, a bigger club-whore than your average Essex bird.

ThorntonSpur made a good point. We're looking onwards and upwards as a club. Unfortunately, we've outgrown some of our players, who won't want to move to a "lesser" club. We're basically stuck with the likes of Keane, Jenas and others unless we give them away.

If played regularly JD will get 15-20 goals this season! harry had a terrible habit of dropping strikers after they'd scored goals last season, which i can't understand. Goalscorers thrive on confidence and this is particularly true of JD who is a streaky scorer, harry somehow thought it would be a good idea last season to twice drop him after he'd netted a brace!

As for Jol, watch Fulham struggle with him at the helm.

Recognition we aren't signing another striker so the manager tries to build up the confidence of the strikers who will play. Expect to see the usual praises of Crouch "top top triffic player" and Pav "top striker" this week.
