Hi all,

During our long car journer to Bern, my fellow Yids and I discussed a variety of Tottenham related subjects.

One that came up was how many Tottenham players (past and present) have captained their national team at somepoint in their career (not just whilst playing for us).

If anyone has any definate (not just a '...he was good so must have been') answers or a place I might be able to get a list from I'd be very grateful.

Below is the list I have so far:

ENGLAND
Viv Woodward
Arthur Grimsdell
Alf Ramsey
Alan Mullery
Martin Peters
Ray Clemence
Gary Lineker
Sol Campbell

SCOTLAND
Dave Mackay
Graeme Souness
Richard Gough

WALES
Ron Burgess
Mike England
Terry Yorath

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND
Robbie Keane

NORTHERN IRELAND
Danny Blanchflower

OTHER
Ramon Vega - Switzerland
Wilson Palacios - Honduras
Dimitar Berbatov - Bulgaria
Paul Stalteri - Canada
Moussa Saib - Algeria
Noureddine Naybet - Morocco
Edgar Davids - Netherlands
Mbulelo Mabizela - South Africa
Jurgen Klinsmann - Germany

I'm pretty sure that at one point Spurs had four captains at different levels for England
Lineker, Mabbutt (B), Nethercott (u21) and Caskey (u18).

For your list you might want to check these, they all may have captained at some point in their careers, not sure
Carr (Ireland)
Nielsen (Denmark)
Kanoute (mali)
Mido (Egypt)
Pat Jennings (N. Ireland)
Zokora (Ivory Coast)
Lee ( S.Korea)
Atouba (cameroon)
Edman (Sweden)
Keller (USA)
Sheringham (England)
Sullivan (Scotland)
Davies (Wales)
Popescu (romania)
Archibald (Scotland)
Ardiles (Argentina)
Brazil (scotland)
Thorstvedt (Norway)
Durie (scotland)
Leonhardsen (norway)
Mendes (portugal)

hope it helps

Thanks for all your replies. It has proved a difficult task trying to find out about several players.

According to my research, Jenas has never captained England and surprisingly Erik the Viking was never captain of Norway either. I have also considered these but found no evidence to support them as being captain:

Carr (Ireland)
Nielsen (Denmark)
Kanoute (mali) - SURPRISING
Mido (Egypt)
Pat Jennings (N. Ireland) - SURPRISING
Zokora (Ivory Coast) - SURPRISING
Lee ( S.Korea)
Atouba (cameroon)
Edman (Sweden)
Keller (USA)
Sheringham (England)
Sullivan (Scotland)
Davies (Wales)
Popescu (romania) - SURPRISING
Archibald (Scotland)
Ardiles (Argentina)
Brazil (scotland)
Thorstvedt (Norway) - SURPRISING
Durie (scotland)
Leonhardsen (norway)
Mendes (portugal)

If anyone believes differently please let me know.

Thanks again for all your help....much appreciated!

Why on earth are those two surprising? They were both superb players.

I think you have misunderstood my post mate.

I was stating that I was SURPRISED at the fact that it appears they were not captain of their country during their career....thus more than agreeing with you that they were superb players.

Yep, I'd misread it and thought you were saying the exact opposite - sorry!

The rate he's going, you'll be adding El Hamdaoui to that list soon enough, now he's decided he's Morroccan and not Dutch.

Keller was indeed US captain and, as i type this, i have this urge to go look to see if Rocket Ronnie ever got to wear the strap for Israel? I know he's viewed as the man who knocked France out of the '94 World Cup quals, but was he ever captain?

Should've been - Scoring headers from the next postcode and single handedly destroying Saints, he left me with some fond memories

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH, ROCKET RONNIE!!
