What's new

How long until we can judge our new signings?

I am mainly referring to our big money signings and also the age of them. My figures below are approximate.

Soldado was 28m but I think he is old enough to handle any criticism if he has a lean patch.

Eriksen was 11m so I have no doubt this was a bargain but he is only 21.

However the one I am most worried about is Lamela. 30m at 21 is massive. Also he is apparently expected to be our bale replacement in a completely new league.

Do we think spurs fans will give these 3 time, especially the two youngsters? I really hope we do.

Any thoughts welcome.

It all depends on their work ethic. Soldado, even when he gets 2 touches a game (and both turn to goals ;)), runs about all the time, looking to get a pass.

I heard Eriksen worked hard at Ajax as well, and if he does that here, even if he pulls a Siggy for a couple of games, we won't get on his back, but we'll all hope he gets better while Holtby takes over for a while.

As for Lamela, I don't think anybody's gonna want to be annoyed at a 21 year old record signing, and if he has a rough patch, then we'll support him through it.

The best thing about this is, even though we've brought in unbelievable quality, we still have tons of it that don't play if these guys do. AVB, Levy, Franco and Lewis have all banded in, and brought us not just players, but a brilliant squad coming through. If we don't do as well as some think we will this year, we definitely will next year. I'm looking forward to it.

Such a hard thing to tell, and everyone will be different. I mean Lamela's 21 he could find I hard to adapt or because of his youth he may have no fear at all and carry on where he left off at Roma. I won't judge any of them till at least Christmas, next season will be huge for us, not saying this season won't but next season I'd say we will be massive.

Picking up a new language alone is months, AVB. is multilingual, he will speed up the process. I remember Bergkamp at the scum was very shit the first year, but was a worldy the next, and he already spoke English.

Next season we will see the cream rise to the top, we will challenge this season but may pull up short.

Yeah remember how Bale had a fantastic start to his Spurs career.....

Sometimes all you need is a bit of time. :)

Each player individually: at Christmas.

The team as a whole: end of season.

And that's early.

These are all quality players with football brains. I think they need about 2 months to gel with one another. Of course there are other issues like family settling might slow their progress. If they all work hard, they should hit top form by about Christmas.

They all have to score a Hattrick at arsenal or they are all crap ;)

Give them as much time as needed, as long as they show the hunger to play for us and show that they have something to bring.

I actually think they'll all do well for us, only one I'm a bit meh about is Chadli and even he's gonna be a useful squad player. Have to admit that cautious optimism is in place over Lamela. He's young and by all accounts pretty shy. I hope we don't have a situation where he finds it difficult to adapt or is homesick.

I would hazard a guess and say that if any of them have a bad game or two their will be some " fans" slagging them off straight away.

If you pop over to the Erikson thread, people are already writing him off! Crazy!

Considering there have already been some "Chadli is crap" posts, I'm guessing they'll all be written off by some people as soon as we drop a point.

The problem is, is that people expect the new signings to recreate Bale and score world class goals all the time. But in reality, that just isn't going to happen. The signings we have made should strengthen the team as a whole so a lot of people will actually find it difficult to see how important various players roles are.
