As a salutory to Martin Jol, it would be a nice gesture. As a message to the board, I think it would be futile.
I understand the sentiment behind it, smithy. I would like nothing more than for MJ to know how much he meant to us. But the only thing a football club's board understand these days is money. The only way to get them to change their minds is if fans refuse to spend money. And that doesn't seem very likely does it?
And there's a very important point that we have to bear in mind. As saddening as it is for many of us that we've lost Martin Jol (and it is), the club needs us right now, quite desperately. To twist a well-known phrase slightly, 'the Spurs must go on'.
We're in trouble. We need to start turning the season around. A club's fans are its twelfth man, and with the team struggling, we have got to get behind the club.
And if for no other reason, we need to make sure that MJ's contribution doesn't go to waste by us spending our energy on a lost cause. If we back the team and we move forward and win things, MJ's part in that success will be assured. To my mind, there would be no greater vindication of just what he brought to the club.
