Hmm I was thinking if we play Palacios against Sunderland, and he picks up a booking in the match, that means he will miss 2 games - the FA Cup semi-final and the derby against the Scums. While we could do without him for the semi, we definitely need him for the derby.
So it might actually be better that a yellow-carded Palacios gets himself sent off for a 2nd yellow offence in stoppage time of the game so that he misses only the semi-final (he only serves the 1 game red card suspension for double-bookings and will have 9 yellow cards and 1 red card). As the 10 yellow card = 2 match suspension ruling would not be in effect by the time we play the Scums, we have actually saved a 1 match suspension in this respect.
However, he must be careful not to get a straight red instead of a double-booking as it will mean he needs to serve a 3 match suspension (1 match for the red card + another 2 matches for reaching 10 yellows). Another downside is that if he gets another red card again this season, he has to serve an extra match of suspension on top of the usual suspension, though if you think about this case, the net effect is that the 1 match suspension he saved against the Scums gets transferred to another match against a possibly weaker team.
And if we're chasing a goal in injury time, it might not make much sense for him to get a red card to disrupt our play. So this strategy possibly works best when we're winning and Palacios happens to pick up a yellow card in the Sunderland game. Of course, it's best that Palacios doesn't pick up a booking if Harry actually plays him at all.
