No nation has ever done the coveted European Championship/Eurovision double. Can Italy be the first?

Without a shadow of a doubt the centre backs and goalkeepers are the weak links for England. This is going to be a make or break tournament for Pickford, I hope he's up for the challenge.

Agreed. Was hoping Henderson would’ve kicked on more than he has this season as I feel he’s a better all round GK than Pickford.

Centre back is definitely an issue. Maguire and Stones are decent enough, but Mings is prone to mistakes and Coady is only good in a back 3/5. Tomori would have been in my squad. I like White though - just hope he impresses enough in the camp but I think he’s only been included in the provisional squad for the experience. Such a shame Gomez is injured.

Right back is going to be one hell of a battle. Walker, James, Trippier, and TAA all have a legitimate claim to be in the squad. I could see us bring three, with Walker playing as one of three centre-backs although I hope we elect to play a 4-3-3.

It’s also going to be a close call between Shaw and Chilwell. The former has been excellent for most of the season but the latter finished so strongly that he could well stake a decent claim. If we elect to play with wingbacks, Chilwell would be my pick.

Midfield also has some issues. If we go for a three man midfield, will Southgate go with one or two holding midfielders? I hope he goes with one, and if that’s the case, we only need to bring two of Henderson, Rice, and Phillips. I would like to see Grealish brought into that cohort of central midfielders as I feel he does his best work from that central/slightly-left position. Mount is a certainty to start, too. Would love to see Bellingham get some minutes in the friendlies, too; he’s the most well-rounded midfielder we have in terms of defensive and offensive qualities.

We are strong on the wings, although the form of Rashford and Sterling is a worry. As it stands, Sancho and Foden would be my picks. They’ve both been superb in 2021. Few defences will be able to contain their flair, guile, and technique.

Kane is our key player, but I worry about Calvert-Lewis. He definitely offers another attacking dynamic due to his fantastic ability in the air and physicality, but I’m not sure he is cute enough on the ball to replicate Kane’s link-up play if needs be. My pick would have been Ings if he had maintained his fitness all season, with Bamford my second choice as his link-up play is great.

I think it's got to be TAA missing out really - Walker will get the nod in case we need to go to a back 3, and James and Trippier are much stronger all-rounders.

The 7 that will miss out

Ramsdale
White
Godfrey/ward-Prowse
Trippier/TAA
Lingard
Saka
Watkins

Godfrey or Ward-Prowse will depend on who is likely to be fitter quicker out of maguire and Henderson

I still think you just have to take TAA. He was in questionable form earlier in the season but he's been back to his best recently and he's genuinely got one of the best right feet in world football.

If we want pure defensive solidity in the first 11 then sure, Walker provides that better than anyone, but if we're losing and need some creativity from the bench, who better than TAA to come on and start whipping balls into the box? He's also be great against negative teams that just sit back against us as Walker won't provide half as much going forward in those types of games.

I like James a lot too and Trippier isn't a bad option, but TAA is the most unique option of the three and needs to be included. I'm a bit worried Southgate with take Trippier instead - who has also admittedly had a good season - because he can also play LB, but if we have Chilwell and Shaw, is that really necessary?

I think he'll probably still take Saka simply due to his versatility. Gareth has been banging on about the importance of positional adaptability and Saka can play in pretty much any attacking midfield role, LB and LWB so I reckon he gets in.

Agree with all the others, though.

But for saka to come on means England has a massive injury crisis which means they are stuffed anyway

For sake to play England need Chilwell and Shaw injured and pretty much all of sterling rashford foden Greenwood sancho and grealish

I think there are situations where Saka could offer something different tbh. If we want to play with wingbacks he'd provide a more attacking option in the LWB role than either of the natural left backs, and is also more suited to that position than all of the attacking players you listed.

Given Gareth's love for a stodgy back 5, I can definitely see him bringing him for that reason alone.

On recent form I'd also prefer him to Sterling as an outright attacking option, as he's been in shocking form for months.

Greenwood withdrawing makes Southgate's life a bit easier. I think I'd personally keep Watkins and Saka and leave Rashford out.

Ramsdale
Godfrey
Trippier (would be TAA, but his ability to change a game could be beneficial.)
JWP
Lingard
Rashford

If Henderson isn't deemed fit then Lingard stays, if Maguire isn't deemed fit then Godfrey stays.

United in a nutshell

Greenwood has an "underlying injury" when called up to the U21 squad in March.
Straight back in to the United side after the break is over. Plays all the way to the EL final.
"Underlying injury" flares up again when the Euro squad is being picked.

I genuinely wonder what Greenwood himself thinks of this.

Greenwood got wind he was being axed so withdrew himself

Can't hurt the United's players reputation so instead of being cut from the squad he left due to being "injured"

TAA isn't a good defender but not taking him a major tournament is wild.

Trippier has been excellent in La Liga and is a champion.

Reece James has had a good season, won the UCL and Tuchel is already improving him as a player (Chilwell too).

Walker is trusted and can legitimately play in a back three.

I'd list Walker as a centre back so that I can take all four.

Good luck Gareth.

You'd probably drop Trent, he's gonna be around for longer anyway - this is probably Walker and Trippier's last Euro's.
