You'd probably drop Trent, he's gonna be around for longer anyway - this is probably Walker and Trippier's last Euro's.

Should come into any reason as to why to pick someone or drop others. It's all down to who is better, not a nice gesture for a last shot at a tournament.

But agree I'd probably drop TTA anyway

In this instance I think that's the only reason you can drop one of the rb's as they're practically inseparable.

No Ramsdale, Godfrey, White, Lingard, Ward Prowse, Watkins or Greenwood.

Happy with that tbh. Assuming Greenwood genuinely did pull out due to injury, it's exactly who I would've dropped.

All the RBs picked so no drama there either.

Taking four right backs in a 26-man squad seems excessive and screams indecision and not wanting to make a tough call.

Four CBs is too few when he likes 3 at the back and Macguire is unlikely to be properly fit.

They're all so damn good and offer something different, so I don't really see the issue tbh.

Would prefer to have an extra genuine top quality RB option than another middling CB or CM.

Plus Walker can play RCB, Tripper can cover LB and Trent can be an auxiliary winger, so they're quite a versatile bunch.

Well the issue is the squad number is finite. If Maguire isn't fit and another CB gets injured we've serious problems there. Walker isn't a good CB.

Walker will play RCB if Southgate plays a back three so that's four left for two slots really.

But there's no doubt CB is the weakest area in this squad.

There's no issue really, James and Walker can play CB as well.

I'll be honest I'm more than happy with that squad

True but what I'm saying is better to have multiple unique RB options that might all genuinely get a game depending on the opponent rather than a fairly average 5th/6th choice CB/CM who will only ever get a game due to massive injury crisis.

I'm really looking forward to this. Qualifying is boring, but the tournaments themselves are great (apart from Qatar which can fuck off). I love seeing the carnival atmospheres at the games. They are a great celebration of football.

Croatia will give us a tough game but we should qualify from that group no problem at all. Then again this is england...

It's a fair point. I guess he's being pragmatic.

France have the best pool of players but are in a group with Portugal and Germany. If they get through that they will win.

Three (Five) at the back incoming again, especially if we get to the knock out rounds. Walker definitely and also probably James will be used as options on the right of the centre backs. Coady is as military medium as it comes but his USP is playing as sweeper in a back three.

Same as always for England though. We have some of the pieces of the jigsaw, and some we don't have. Whether the manager could put them in the right places is another matter. Ultimately I still think we lack the nous and ability to be able to control the ball, the centre of the park, and so ultimately football matches when it comes to the crunch. That is an ongoing process that player development and further tactical enrichment of the English game still has to solve.

Personally think Southgate bottled the decision to appease fans and media at large rather than what's best for a squad in a tournament situation.

Needed to either bolster CB with Maguire's fitness question mark or, and in my opinion more importantly, the centre of the park over Hendersons fitness and selected JWP.

Trent's the most talented RB but clearly 4th choice - how often will actually get game time? Also this obsession of 'versatile players' - here's a novelty, play round pegs in round holes and select a defence that's solid to support where the talents clearly lie which is going forwards.

Have you seen Germany lately? They're....not what they were.
They've definitely been extremely poor, but I still think they're capable of getting their act together for the tournament. Not saying they will by any means, just that they could. Sort of the inverse of England's capacity to assemble the best team they've had for a good while, with a strong qualification performance, and still fall flat on their face once the tournament begins.
