Was never convinced. Couldn't beat Scotland, beat the worst German team in my lifetime (I'm 42), beat a very poor Ukraine side and then scraped through against a Danish team without their best player. And all bar Ukraine were played at our home ground.

Italy were the first decent team we came up against.

Same as the last World Cup. This England team hasn’t had to beat anyone decent in two tournaments now.

Fair play to Italy, they’ve beaten Belgium and Spain on their way to becoming the deserved winners. That’s how a tournament winner should be remembered.

Absolutely gutted. I think it could of been managed better but very proud of the boys.

Also a shout out to mancini. His changes around 50 minutes changed the game and we never recovered.

Even if the choice of penalty takers were determined based on what they had done in training anyone with eyes on the night could have told you that the game and moment was just a little too much for Saka and someone (anyone really) should have protected him from being the 5th penalty taker.

Can't help thinking we have a big part of the puzzle missing from the England squad. We see Harry Kane drop deep and start playing passes across the field to the wingers like last night or making superb passes through the eye of a needle like to Saka and I'm thinking there should be someone doing that for him.
That "Eriksen" roll is completely missing and I'm not sure there's an English player that can do it, Dele Alli maybe but he's not earned a place in the squad. I thought Mount might but he can't so we go without and that costs England dear.

There was nothing beautiful about the football played tonight. Other than the goal in the 2nd minute we were just sitting back. We’ve some of the best attacking players in the world sat on the bench. Then we sub Rice for Henderson ?‍♂️
I certainly wouldn’t say they some of the worlds best attacking players were in the bench, who? Messi,Ronaldo,Haaland,Lewandoski,De Brunei?.The trouble is that a little bit of success and we build up our players to be something they are not, the press do exactly the same.
Emma Raducanu is being hailed as England’s fantastic new star tennis player, why, because at 18 she won a match at Wimbledon. One match against another player who is someone few have ever heard of. Next game she had to pull out bless her,the stress had got to her.
Accept that the English players are not as good as we perceive them to be and that includes our beloved Harry"

Far too negative again last night. Didn’t deserve to win it.

I think you're right.

We were looking fairly comfortable at the 60 minute mark, but by then Italy were building up to turn the screw.

I think we should have been more positive from the off, but certainly from 55 to 60minutes. We should have made 3 or 4 changes, lots of fresh legs and gone hell for leather with pressing for the last half hour.

We certainly have the players to do that.

Oh well...

Also, Southgate should have set us up to win or lose in the 90 minutes.

Death or glory.

There's always extra pressure on England when it comes to penalties.

The only time it's acceptable to play for penalties is when you're an underdog of Switzerland v France levels or bigger, or have had men sent off.

England can not, should not ever play for penalties but the subs make it so clear that Southgate was doing just that.

I thought he was pretty mediocre this tournament tbh, although I am aware that sounds like I'm putting the boot in when he's down and I don't mean it like that.

But there are certainly better players who should be starting ahead of him in my opinion.

As you say though, fair play to him for stepping up to take the penalty; that required some serious courage.

Italy needed the lottery of penalties to win both the semi final and final. How exactly does that make them deserving winners than England would have been?

They struggled against Austria and I thought they were thoroughly outplayed by Spain for large chunks of the semi final. The goal they scored in the final was down to poor set piece defending from England. What's more impressive about them than any other team?

They can handle the pressure better
