Thinks it's also very useful to include minutes played. Maddison played almost double Kulusevski's total, while Zaniolo was in-between. If you double Kulu's numbers that should give a fairer comparison with Maddison, while you can add about 20-25% to Zaniolo's.

Kulu: 1259
Maddison: 2454
Zaniolo: 1998

Got to say, Maddison's output is very impressive given his minutes and position. Almost scoring 12 - almost 1 in 2 games - as a CAM in a struggling team with an xG of 6.6 is fucking nuts (and probably not sustainable tbh).
Its worth noting that until very recently, most teams/scouts were looking for players with the highest xG and xA thinking that this indicated the best players.

Now though that theory is changing, and mainly popularised by Liverpool's scouting system the last few years. Their theory is that the best indicator for good players is actually overperformance of their xG. Meaning how many goals more than their xG did they actually score.

The belief is that the overperformance shows that the player is an elite finisher and capable of scoring goals from very unlikely situations. This of course would reflect very well on Maddison with an overperformance of 5.4 on his xG.

It’s also worth taking into consideration the players age, Maddison is 26 in November where as Zaniolo just turned 23. Taking those stats and the age difference one can understand why Conte would be looking at Zaniolo. No reason why he couldn’t be as good or even better by 25/26 with proper coaching which is what Conte seems to believe is the case.
I think that's quite a generous interpretation - I think the stats are interesting Zaniolo of the 3 looks like he attempts the most dribbles which is what we all thought his assist record is by far the worst but the ones that I would be a little worried about is that his passing numbers are really low- now that could be what he is asked to do in the side or that he doesn't get involved that much I don't know - and people are talking about him being a wing back when his tackling numbers are poor compared to the the other two -

not saying anyone is right or wrong and I am always little bit wary of stats without visual evidence but they do as they say tell a story

Makes a lot of sense. Son and Kane have consistently outperformed xG across their careers and I think Son is the biggest overperformer in Europe over 5 seasons, which bodes well!

Maddison does seem to have a very natural ability to score long range shots and FKs so also makes sense in his case.

I'm not sure that's so important at those ages, at 26 Maddison is hitting his peak now and we'd be likely getting four or five years of him at his best.
That said itk seems adamant that he's not for us so let's hope we get the 23 year old.

Looks like Leicester may not have been open to selling Maddison after all (and thankfully not selling Fofana to Chelsea)

Barnes has got an injury too, and pereira is out for 6 months. They aren't going to sell him this window otherwise they'll have no attack left!

I could see him signing a new deal with a release clause, gets a pay rise, protects Leicester and gives him an escape route.
