Because he's probably in the top 2/3 CB's in the Prem and he's getting smashed 5-0 every 3 weeks, understandable that he's a bit pissed off.

So according to some we’ve got a world class central defender and a world class goalkeeper. Either 1 or both of these players are not as good as some think or the other 9 players are absolutely shockingly shocking!!!

Lol , the truth lies somewhere inbetween I think.

Jan is a what I would call a total footballer, and I can understand his frustration and lack of commitment to a team that has really played total shite since the minute he was persuaded to sign on the dotted.
I bet it wasn't like this in the brochure.

Jan has looked way off his best for a while now. Of course playing the highline and next to different partners (who have all been fairly woeful) hasn't helped.

I think Vertonghen's been scapegoated a bit to be honest. I don't think he's been terrible this season. I think he's been played in a position he hates way too often, he's playing in a terrible back four (in a high line with a bunch of dimwits a lot of it), and for a team that has switched to a manager who doesn't believe in pressing the ball and who's dimwitted henchman doesn't believe in DM"s.

Yes, he's not perfect, yes he makes mistakes. But show me a great CB out there at the moment though, there aren't too many, and weighing up the pros and cons I think he's still one of the best footballing CB's in the EPL right now and if we could find a decent LB and a decent CB to play each side of him I reckon we'd see a more consistent and valuable Vertonghen.

I hope we keep him and sort out the other positions, then I think his strengths should far out weigh his weaknesses.

I think that's over-egging the pudding a bit. He's undoubtedly a good player, but he's not even the best centre-back at Spurs, let alone one of the top 2/3 in the Premiership.

he over rates himself. we are at the right level for him. he's not better than the CBs or LBs in the other top 4 teams.

He's far better than any of Liverpool's CB's and he'd be the absolute perfect partner for Kompany at City, being also better than all their other CB's.

Kompany now is like Kaboul when he was at his best - absolutely dominant. We always wanted a proper footballing CB to replace Ledley and play alongside Kaboul - we got probably the best one it was possible to get in Vertonghen. Unfortunately, at that moment Kaboul's legs fell off, and he still can't find the screws.

Absolutely all this.

I'm convinced our only hope of keeping Jan at the club is to bring in van Gaal - who I also think will absolutely bring out the best in him.

He certainly won't stand for Danny fucking Rose jogging up the wing and then sitting on the floor slapping his hands around when he loses it and doesn't bother tracking back - something I expect drives Jan up the wall.

Agree entirely.

He joined the club as a top class CB, and being told he would play CB was one of the reasons he joined us according to the press.

So out of 70 PL games so far , how many times has he been started as a standin backup for a sub standard left back in the first place ?

And last season, when he crossed the halfway line, he looked the next best attacker after Bale, now Bale's gone he's probably thinking WTF like a lot of us.

We've let him down , not the other way round IMO

I wouldn't say 9, but certainly when you look at our line-ups there's 4/5 that are nowhere near Jan's level.

Who are you suggesting is better? Kaboul? His legs have gone mate unfortunately, and I don't see him ever getting back to the level he was at 4 years ago. Vertonghen is not only our best CB, he's our best player period.

By that token any decent player not at a champ league should just give up and have a strop? The great players stand out regardless. Mentality is just as important as technical attributes.

However I think we're all probably reading a bit too much into his body language, I think he's just in poor form this season.

Many years back we had and lost a similar classy defender in Richard Gough. We didn't keep him for long I fear Vert will also move on quickly....whatever the reason given:(

Any player that doesn't give his all for whatever reason is not a 'best player'

Your best player is the one you can rely on consistently. I hate to see a player not playing to their full potential out of spite/indifference/frustration.

It is one thing to try and not quite be good enough, its another to be more than good enough and not even try.

Agree, we've conned him. Can't blame the guy for having aims. It's annoying to see on the pitch, but in many ways he epitomises our frustrations. He's better placed than I to do something about it though, so I won't be too kind.

Regardless of his body language/attitude this year I'd much prefer a Van Gaal-motivated Vertongen in the starting line-up next season than ship him out and buy two CBs. We need to concentrate on getting him a settled partner and a top left back.
