Tottenham prepare £6m January bid for Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp will move to solve his goalkeeping problems by making a £6m bid for Manchester United’s Ben Foster.

Foster admitted this week that he may be forced to leave Old Trafford in search of regular first team action.
As well as frustration at being forced to play third reserve behind Edwin van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak, Foster is also concerned that his lack of game time could jeopardise his chances of being part of Fabio Capello’s England squad for next year’s World Cup finals in South Africa.

Foster started for England in their friendly defeat to Brazil in Qatar last weekend but Capello has long been clear that he will not continue to select players who are not regular starters for their clubs.
“It’s very disheartening not even being on the bench at United,” Foster told the Sun newspaper.
“I’m third choice for United yet playing for my country. It’s a weird one and I’ll see what happens.”
Tottenham are in need of another goalkeeper after Carlo Cudicini was seriously injured in a motorbike accident.
The Italian is certain to miss the rest of the season after fracturing both wrists as well as his pelvis.
Brazilian Heurelho Gomes remains Tottenham’s first choice goalkeeper but Redknapp is keen to secure both cover and competition for the former PSV player.
David James has long been touted as a potential recruitment at White Hart Lane but his own injury problems mean the board may be unwilling to spend money on a player who will have no sale on value at all.

For goodness' sake! Just when I thought all the pap about James died down, this comes out. Why would we go for Foster? I don't rate him in England's top 3 keepers, and if he's not content as 3rd choice at United, why would he be keen to take that position here (cos when Cudicini's fit again, he'll be behind him). This is not good. Foster needs to join a bottom-middle Prem team and play every week, only way he's going to improve.

This is BS, why would he leave a club that he can't get regular games and come to a club where he's got even less chance?

Probably 'leaked' by his agent in order to tempt a bid from someone else in january. I hope for the players sake that he gets a move then but just not to Spurs. With regular games I think he could be England's number 1 but he's not better than Gomes and this would be very expensive back-up.

Papers have rehashed this as they wont let it lie that Harry is 'happy' with Gomes so they will continue all this unsettling talk. Personally I think Foster is distinctly average and it says more about the goalkeepers that are available for the national team than it does for his quality.

This is a total guess, but i reckon he'll join Sunderland after what JD did to Gordon. Probably in a loan move.

I would love him at spurs, i have played against him when he was at Racing Club Warwick and he was absolutely awesome (it was a shit standard by the way)!!

I wouldnt want him to replace Gomes but it would be great cover!! He's 3rd choice at Manure and would be 2nd choice with a fighting chance with us!!

I knew some press would come out with this 2 + 2 after Foster's comments at the weekend.
I'm sure we need a backup but I doubt it will be FOster.

I thought we had 3 goalkeepers - Gomes, Walker and Button - why would we need another - where is walker by the way, what is the story, is he injured?

I think there was a similar, if not exactly the same article in the Sun too. Unless he gets assurances that he will be number 1 he won't come. Capello is more likely to pick him not playing for United then not playing at Spurs. Not sure he is worth £6 million either.

I think him and Heskey are exempt from Capello's rule about playing regularly for your club.

why not joe lewis at peterboro...possibly a future fixture in the england set up & far better value & decent cover.. capello knows of him already as well.

Now that it is in the telegraph too (ie supposed broadsheet) and possibly will appear somewhere else knowing the press, I hope rent-a-quote Harry comes out to rebuff these rumours (if they are rumours) even before the pre-match press conference on Friday. Gomes must be sick of these "rumours" continually popping up - and only he and Harry know if this is because the media have a reason to believe that Harry is still not 100 % behind Gomes and might still be looking for an alternative that fits his bill better.

From what I have seen I am far from convinced about him, the amount of goals he concedes where I think 'Gomes would have saved that' happens quite bloody often. And why would he moan about being out of the frame at United then come here to sit on the bench? If he came here and was installed as No1 my general view that 'managers know better than us fans ever will' philosophy would instantly fade!

To be honest, I wouldn't replace Gomes with a 8x24 foot brick wall!

The 'quality' papers are barely any more reliable than the tabloids when it comes to transfer stories.

I've never been struck by Foster, even when he was getting rave reviews during his stint with Watford, and the fact that he's dropped behind Kusczak in the pecking order at OT isn't exactly a recommendation.
