"I spoke to the chairman and there's not going to be an awful lot of money around in January and I think it's going to be a tight transfer window because of the recession which has hit the country," Redknapp said.
"We'll have to look around for a couple of bargains like everybody else."

Whatever happened to the 70 million pound war chest we had at our disposal from the sales of our best players? I thought we were going to splash the cash in January. Mr. Levy is a deceitful guy, it seems.

News to me at the very least we should have the money from the Berbastrop & Keane deals. Maybe he doesn't trust Harry with the money.

If Harry was to come out and say 'yeah we got loads of money to splash about, fantastic' then we stand more chance of getting ripped off in January. That window is always hard as some players aren't available or clubs dont want to sell till the summer. Although last January was one of our best ever, i reckon 3 to 4 players will come in and a couple out

just heard the the press conference where he said that. he only speaks about money being tight in football and the transfer window suffering due to the current economic climate. however, he doesnt mention our finances once.

and has been said before in this thread harry wont be telling the world with have bucket loads of cash to spend as other clubs will only increase their prices.

the last thing we need is another unheaval of the squad. The current squad need time to settle together and I think harry will let this happen.

No doubt he will bring in another striker and central midfielder and possibly another centre back. but i think that will be it.

What i dont want to see happen is a load of unknowns come in. He is know for his bargain basement/wheeling and dealing transfers which has worked well for pomey and established them as a top half squad, but his stratagy at spurs must be different, and it will be interesting to see the standard of players he goes for.

Harry set for £44m transfer spree
By Neil Vaughan - 28/10/2008 10:13

REPORTS in Tuesday's press are suggesting that Tottenham will use Aaron Lennon as bait in a bid to re-sign Jermain Defoe.

Harry Redknapp is a big admirer of Defoe after working with him at West Ham and Portsmouth. The Spurs boss is set to offer Lennon plus cash as part of a deal to bring the striker back to White Hart Lane.

Defoe is said to be valued at £15million by Pompey, and Redknapp has also told the Spurs board that he wants to sign his former midfielder Lassana Diarra.

Redknapp is set to go on a £44million spending spree in January, which could also see him move for West Ham's Robert Green and Matthew Upson and another Pompey player, Sylvain Distin.

2 from Heskey, Owen, Defoe.
Distin would be good as long as he didn't expect to play every game.
Appiah's got to be worth a punt on a free hasn't he?
Gokhan Inler looks quality too and would be the ideal holding player for us I think.

When we signed Bentley I couldn't believe we didnt sell Lennon, so unbalanced when they both start and Harry (Clive!) was spot on not starting both Sunday.

Mind you still think Bentley for 65mins and Lennon for 25 is not a bad plan

Thanks for the clarification. That makes a little more sense if you place Harry's quote in that context.

Probably another case of the anti-Spurs brigade in the media.

I don't why this hasn't been more of a discussion point before. Lennon can be our super sub. He has shown that he doesn't have the class to be a killer all game long. But bring him on in the last 25 minutes or so and he can run the an already tired defender, ragged. Personally, that is where I feel Lennon is most dangerous.

I'd agree with that. If we're further up the league & still in the wafer then I think we've got a good chance. He & Harry can swap tips on the horse racing.

Owen & a couple of big lumps to kick even bigger lumps out of the opposition will do.

Get in De Jong to fill the DM as a straight swap for Zokora cos Jol likes him!
Capel to fill the vacant LW
Distin for the CB
& Ashavin to play just off the attack with Modric

Gomes

Hutton - Distin - Woodgate - Bale
De Jong
Bentley .................................. Capel

Modric ..... Ashavin
Pavlychenko
Did you know we could have had Nigel De Jong on a free. Jol wanted to get him from Ajax. The reason we didn't was that we wouldn't pay him £40K a week...Typical Daniel Levy!!

This is going to sound less than water tight, but we (as Spurs Community members) were told by numerous sources (ITK or not) that the fee for Berbatov was merely accumulating interest until it was spent in January.

Not to mention, we still need a top drawer striker so we will need to spend, ;)

Just back on this point made by Spurs Mad, everyone knows how much money we spent and made in the summer window. We more or less spent as much as made on sales. So presumably, we had an original budget which was never touched at all.

If Redknapp went shouting his mouth off saying "Yeah I've money to spend in January, I've got X amount to spend in total", that would just be stupid.

Obviously the quote can be heard from Harry on the BBC website as they have the press conference in full, and it's no more a side comment than anything else. Things are never as they seem, especially football/Spurs related media stories! People should know that by now!

Harry is only putting it out there that 'officially' we won't be spending money due to the global recession.

But I'm sure we've got a few pounds somewhere that can and will be spent if he thinks it's needed

(and let's be honest, it's needed at the moment!)

If the appointment of Harry brings a stop to all the needless spending then great. i do not believe that Bent is worth anywhere near 16mil, bentley 17,5mil, or Kaboul at 8,5mil, zokora 7mil, Hutton 9mil, pavluchenko 14mil, etc, etc. we paid over the odds for all those players. i have no problem with the club spending that type of money but it has to be on players worth that value, compare those signing and money spent vs Keane at 7mil from leeds and Berba at 10.9mil from bayerl everkusen. Hell Harry got Diarra for 5mil, Defoe for 7.5mil his true value i believe is closer to 9mil and no more.

Where did you hear this? There was a Hamburg itk who posted on GG a whlie back and he said the same thing. He said Jol had moves blocked for Mathijsen and Castelan aswell and this is why HSV were able to sign them. Also he said KPB wouldn't leave because German clubs wouldn't pay what Levy wanted and Levy wouldn't agree to a loan with a clause to buy at the end of it. This seems to be proven true.

I wouldn't mind any 3 from the following players ;

Nadir Belhadj,Sylvain Distin,or Lassana Diarra from Portsmouth.
Wilson Palacios from Wigan.
Djibril Cisse from Sunderland.

If we are going to Sunderland for a striker surely it should be Jones?

I think you are seeing Harry work the market already. Now we may have less that 70 million due to the credit crunch and all of the managerial expenses, but it could be that Harry realizes that we have overspent on almost every player except Dos Santos that I can remember. So by saying we don't have much, we should be able to avoid something like the Arshavin debacle.

2 strikers (Defoe & Ashton) send FC back to Man Yoo
2 DM (Parker & Diarra) ship out Zokopops
1 LW (Capel/Arshavin)
1 CB (depending on King's fitness - no idea who)
