It seems clear to me what Defoe is saying. He has not signed, He will not leave because He "loves it here" and no player would stay if they were left on the bench all the time actually means "I will wait till my contract runs down and get myself a massive pay day, I will keep the fans on my side by telling them I love the club and then just like Sol I will give the fans the finger and walk." The club is powerless to do anything about it.

If he has been told this, then it begs the questions what will happen if Berbatov goes as well, either this window or in the summer? Are we to be left with just Keane and Bent.............or has JR got something going on that we are being kept in the dark about.....like we have found a couple of 'New' Berbatovs for instance?
Firstly Berbatov is never going to leave Spurs EVER.

Secondly. Full marks to Juande, Defoe won't sign, for whatever reasons, proberbly justified, so Ramos has told him look mate, your a good player, I can not guarantee you games, would be nice if you stay, but I understand that you are relcutent to sign, so off you go, you are free to leave. If you want to stay then sign.

Spot on! Who can blame a player of Deoe's ability seeking assurances about getting a game before signing.
I think he is genuine ,wants to stay but wants to play.

As in Hotel California, never leave, or pop his cloggs type of never leave?

Oh, Ok, i thought he might have said to him, 'Who the fuck do you think you are eh, do you have friends in the reserves?
cos we have others lined up to replace you!'

(ps, shouldnt you be concentrating on the Prem fixtures )

What does Defoe not understand? He is a third or fourth choice forward at Spurs and we will not guarantee him a first team start, there are better players ahead of him.
Its no good him saying that he wants to stay and fight for his place,he will not be given that opportunity until he signs along the dotted line.
If he does'nt sign we must sell him!

The Sun newspaper quotes the 25-year-old as saying that Ramos told him he is free to leave the club, but that he is determined to show his true worth after starting the overwhelming majority of the games from the bench this season.

"The manager has said I can leave if I want but I want to prove him wrong," said Defoe. "I want to stay here.

"He (Ramos) just said, 'You can leave if you want to'. Yet I have no intentions of leaving this club because I love it here."

When asked about reports suggesting that he has been offered a five year contract extension deal worth £10.5M a season, Defoe said:

"How can I be expected to stay for the next few years if I am going to be on the bench all the time?

"I don't think any player would accept that."

Defoe has scored five goals in seven matches recently, and the sure footedness he has shown in front of goal since his time at West Ham means that he would not be stuck for choices if he did elect to leave Spurs.

if he did sign a new contract he could still leave if he wasn't happy, same as berbatov (diff reasons). the only reason he is stalling is because if he leaves at the end of his contract, he is the one in control of where he goes, and will get more monies.(ehehe)

levy is a twat but he isnt that stupid, he will offer jd a contract to make him keane and berba the high earners at the club, and defoe will accept it... as long as ramos tells him he is as important as keane, which i think he will, cos ramos is not stupid.

well, heres hoping anyway..

I would like him to stay as he is a big assett even though he doesnt get much pitch time. It would be interesting to think why JD was told he can go? Is it because they want to put the pressure on him now to sign the new deal or has Ramos got other plans like cashing in on him and bringing another striker into the club? I guess we will see. I think defoe not getting any firm offers from clubs that are really no better than us will make him sign the new deal.

Looks like it's Catch-22. And, as BEN suggested, the board is using Ramos in the same way they used Jol.

 When you get hold of something SS, you really don't like to let it go, do you? It's like your irrational dislike of Pablo, who right or wrong, just like every other ITK, reports what he hears, and because he's in the press is often closer to the truth than others.

Or Spursking, who though a bufoon with some make-believe issues, is harmless enough and often good fun, but who for some reason inspires you to an almost hatred it seems, like my dog, with cats, lol.

And finally this one, with the board, with no more evidence than I and with a mind as good as anyone's you still manage to spin a real confection of a story out of minimal material. This is because it fits what you want to believe, imo, rather than because you want to get close to the truth of situation.

Try an alternative theory: Ramos doesn't rate Defoe.

There, much simpler and, given the starts the new man has given him and Defoe's lack of all round team contribution, extremely plausable.

Maybe Ramos knows more about the Berbatov situation than we do, like he's staying and we don't need another "top quality striker" hanging around. I can't see him letting both go without having a back up plan.

Gus Poyet said it all "there will be big changes", It seems to me that like many people have said Defoe wants and thinks he should be playing every week, but can Sven Martin and Juande all be wrong??, Defoe has always been a flashly little Sh*t does everyone remember West H*m, all he is doing is tounting himself for a offer that has not appered, JERMAINE IF YOU LOVE THIS CLUB YOU WOULD HAVE SIGNED LONG AGO, Sorry good on Juande remember this man turned Freddie into one of the best strikers in Europe.

If Ramos has told Defoe he can leave then he's a aint a clue. He's way better than Bent and Defoe scores more goals from comming of the bench than most premiership strikers.

The guys been treating like shit by this club and he still wants to stay. Spurs is falling apart, instead of tellin defoe he can go tell the ones who aint pulling there weight they can go.

Why sign a contract if Ramos wont play him. Im sorry like but cant blame him.

He should just wait till spurs can get nothing for him and go on a free. More fool the club, there already the laughing stock of football.
