You have a very liberal definition of legend. Good striker promised much but never truly great. Otherwise he would not have been substitute for every manager.

Hhmm, well if scoring over 100 goals for the club (only the 16th player to do so) doesn't make you a legend, on some level, that I'd love to know what you have to do in your eyes to be considered one.

I fully agree that the term gets thrown around far too much but JD has given me more enjoyment than most players whilst watching Spurs so for that reason he will ALWAYS be a yiddo in my eyes and frankly a legend. Don't really care if anyone agrees with me or not, that's just how I feel about it.

Mark my words, if he leaves then it will come back to bite us. Just saying.

Looks like Defoe will certainly be gone if someone meets our price, Stobart is basically the go-to guy for official leaks and it confirms what Jetset hinted at the other day.
Defoe will definitely go, sooner or later. His 4-4-2 style of football is just not our style any more.

Reading's manager doesn't seem to think they'll get him (via Reading's OS):

Lastly, asked about Defoe he said, "Jermaine Defoe is a terrific player, but he's a Tottenham player and I don't think he'll be coming to Reading."

They probably won't get him if they don't even take the trouble to spell his name correctly...

Is Harry Redknapp the Reading manager? Or his recently hired 'tapping up' consultant?

I can't believe we are even thinking about selling him. We only have two recognised strikers at the moment, him included. He is a proven Premiership goalscorer and even if he isn't first choice, he is spectacular back-up. I think it's madness. He's great except for his staying on-side problems but that is it really.

With the Europa League and the cups, we will have lots of games to play. Considering that AVB has said that we will be going for all four of the competitions that we are in, I think Defoe will get a reasonable amount of game time.

I know he wants more minutes but hopefully, given the choice between playing a limited amount of minutes for us (and limited will probably work out at about half I would say considering he would probably start cup matches etc), where we will be challenging for things (hope I 'aint getting ahead of myself here), or playing every game for Reading for example, we are the more attractive option in his eyes and he would choose to stay. After all, as has been mentioned, he is getting on a bit now and I imagine that he would like to look back on his career after having won something.

We need to be strengthening our forward line not diminishing it. I know we have VDV but he isn't an out-and-out striker and even with him, Adebayor and Defoe, we still need more options if we are to be pushing for success this coming season.

I mean, who out there that we can sign this transfer window is of his proven premiership ability? No one springs to mind. The only option otherwise is to look overseas and that isn't guaranteed to work out is it? Helder Postiga jumps to mind here.

I see lots of people saying we should let him go and cash in on him while he has some value. I say, he only cost us what? 7m? Bargain. We should keep him. Let him see out his career with us because I can see him doing the job he has always done for us for at least 3-4 more seasons, as long as he is willing to of course. What rule says that we must sell players of a certain age? He has been great for us and I would like to see him continue to do so.

Obviously this all depends on JD himself and if he is willing to accept this as his role in the club. But it would be an important role. One that we would all appreciate I'm sure. We all know what he can do and how he pops up with important goals.

I would be disappointed to see him go.

I hope he doesn't.

He can only play in 442 and I doubt that we'll be seeing much of 442 next year.
Any striker comming to Spurs has to answer with yes to at least one of the next two qustions:
- can you play as lone striker
- can you play as winger-striker
Defoe can't answer with yes to either of this questions.

I don't think that he has ever been asked to play as a wing/striker. I for one think he could play that role. He has the pace. he could probably cross at least as good as Lennon does. So why not?

I keep seeing on here people saying that JD can only play in a 4-4-2. On what are they basing this assumption? To me that is all it is, an assumption. He has only ever had to play 4-4-2 for us so has never been tried in a slightly different role.

I don't see any reason why he can't try a new role. After all, Anelka went through this transition at Chelsea didn't he? It turned out alright there. There have been plenty of players who have adapted to new positions. Bale is the most glaringly obvious one I can point to right now.

Also, I thought that, as DB has pointed out, "every player has a clean slate to prove himself to the manager". If this is the case, these stories about 1st teamers going are just that, stories. I can understand about fringe players going pretty much straight away, but not JD, surely he would be given a chance to prove himself.

I'm a JD fan if you didn't notice.

Defoe is the litmus test of our transfer-window; if he's still here when the window closes we'll probably be a bit dissapointet with our dealings - if he's gone I think we'll have done good overall.

I love JD. I think we as Spurs fans are never satisfied with him. I'll admit he's not quite lived up to what we had hoped and his poor positional play with his offsides and greediness rightly count against him. But I never quite feel like he's had a good run in a Spurs team that play to his strengths in a while. Robbie Keane's partnership with Berbatov was exceptional and meant JD didn't get a run in the team to form a partnership with Berba but went on to Pompey and banged them in. And since we've been playing with Rafa behind a front man, JD's role has been limited.

But it's a little harsh that so many want him sold. He's a proven goal scorer who I think did exceptionally well last season given his run in the team and he looked fitter and stronger with better hold up play than he's had before. Adebayor's link up play was brilliant and quite rightly kept him out but not many teams can boast a goalscorer like JD who we can bring off the bench or rotate in when injuries or UEFA cup games take something out of our first XI. And if he goes on a scoring run, let him keep going.

Keep him, I say. He may well request a transfer come the end of this season anyway if he ends up bench warming again.

What's funny is AVB just had a press conference and "tapped up" four or five players that do not belong to THFC.

He literally went down a list of players and talked about our interest. When Harry does that, everyone complains. But then again, AVB has done much more for the club than Harry.

Would have hated seeing him playing against us again. There's always a chance of a goal with JD in the team, lives for goals.
