Agree but Dier is not going to replace Wanyama any time soon. I doubt anyone will replace Dier just give more options and cover for cup and injuries.

Agreed, Dier's versatility keeps him the starting 11 most weeks but I actually think we'll see some more of Dier and Wanyama together considering how much Wanyama showed his attacking qualities 2nd half of last season. Naturally first choice will be Dembele and Wanyama and Dier will likely remain at CB but adding Veltman gives us a good option at RCB when Dier is in midfield.

Veltman will not be the Wimmer replacement. Wimmer is left sided, Veltman is right footed. In our system of three at the back, the wider CB's play on their natural side. When Jan was injured and it appeared Wimmer wasn't fancied, we changed to a back 4.

I'm not really talking about what foot they play with, I know that Wimmer is left footed and Veltman is right footed but it's largely irrelevant IMO. Wimmer didn't play last season because Poch arguably didn't trust him enough, not sure either way but as you've said yourself, when Vertonghen went down we end up switching to a back 4 rather than stick with our favoured back 3 so we would still be able to do that whether Wimmer is here or not but the point would be that we would have an actual viable option to rotate into a back 3 if we signed Veltman to replace Wimmer.

As I say, I think we should sign a player like Veltman to give Dier more license to play in CM for when it feels tactically smart to do so. Dier is a very good CM but he's just a good CB....at this stage of his career anyway.

Just to confirm @FootballWhispers have a source on this and it's not just regurgitating previous reports.

Nice to hear. I'm a big fan of this link, shouldn't be a massive drain on the budget and looks a very solid squad addition, and that's before considering the success of our current Ajax recruits.

I like Ginter, and if this was FIFA or FM then he would be the more exciting option, but I think this is the more sensible and ready to go signing we need in this area.

Would fit nicely in with the "buying in one of our favourite shops" from a while back. Ajax + one year remaining on deal = Recruitment boner at Spurs

Didn't we have ITK that we had bid £20m for a defender (right back) several weeks ago? At a reported £8m it can't be Veltman and unlikely to be Ginter.

I think if we sign Veltman it will be specifically as a right sided defender. He could cover Trippier, Dier or Toby. It would also allow Dier a more adaptable role to cover Wanyama in CM. If Wimmer goes I think we will go for a specifically left sided defender to cover him since I think Davies is too much of a liability at LCB.

The welsh think it's his best position though, and we're talking about a back up role since we got Vertonghen

The Welsh don't really have a lot of options though and they have Taylor who's OK at LB. International football is also miles away from the EPL. In internationals you are playing teams who are cobbled together with minimal preparation. It's a different ball game to playing a team that train every day and who are well drilled and organized. Davies has looked OK at LCB for Wales but I think he'd be a liability there for us. He's OK at LB where the touchline does half the work for him but he's all over the place when he's played further infield. We have to have a better contingency should Vertonghen suffer a long term injury IMO.

I'm not sure either way if Davies can play LCB in our system, though Michael Laudrup once saw him as a future Centre Back.

"In the future, and this is my personal opinion, I don't see Ben as being someone like Gareth Bale (who went from playing left-back to left wing).

"But if you see him now he is much stronger - although maybe in some minds over here he lacks some height - and I think in time he can be a good left-footed centre-back.

"He is getting stronger in the air, physically as well, and left-footed centre-backs are difficult to find, look how many sides play with two right-footed centre-backs."

I really don't see us signing two CB's this summer.

As I said, I think people need to get over the idea that we need a left footed CB if Wimmer leaves AND a right footed CB/RB as well.

If Wimmer goes, I personally only see us buying one CB. We still have CCV as well.

I'm Welsh, I've watched him play for us (Wales) in a back 3 and even once in a back 4, he is fantastic, very smart with the ball, 100% is future position.

He will cover left back and centre back especially if we get Sessegnon

Now for Veltman, he looked good in the Europa League final, comfortable with the ball, also remember Ajax fans didn't think Toby could get as good as he did, so if we get him let's see how Poch can mould him.

I am a big supporter of CBs having a preferred side and playing them there, but I don't think we necessarily need to replace Wimmer with an LCB. Many right footed players have become top LCBs, including Ledley, the other way around is a lot rarer.

If you add Veltman you allow us to retain the option to use a 3-4-3 if Dier or Wanyama are injured (I still think 4-2-3-1 will be more regular). I agree with Davies covering Jan in a three if Vertonghen is out, and in that scenario if we go for a 4 we will hope one of the RCBs will adapt.

The hate could come from his unsporting behavior instead of his qualities as a footballer
