Laxcroix in talks with Southampton… wasnt he a big talent a year ago? Why can’t we go for him
I guess that shows the level he's really at. I also think Sanchez has shown enough we don't need to replace him.

You make a lot of valid points. However on the faulty mindset bit I take some exception. If you go out for dinner with a £100 budget and you wont be eating out again for 4 months and you get there and the resturant throws in some free sides (perisic and forster) and tells you the steak that is usually £50 is £25 (bissouma) do you order a dessert as you are still a little hungry and have room for it Or do you go home with £££ in your pocket. You have the budget for it. And the you clearly don't fancy any of the dessert options at home (sarr, spence, gil, lenglet)

The fact that they were cheap only increases the incentive to add more.
I think your analogy here falls exactly into line with how I feel about assessing a spend. I appreciate that me calling that mindset "faulty" is harsh... I suppose a better term would be shortsighted.

There is a difference between going out for a steak dinner and going out for a £100 dinner. In your example the person is only having dessert because they want to spend £100. This only makes sense if the £100 is going to disappear at the end of the night... which it isn't.

To extend your analogy a bit; what if the restaurant didn't have the dessert the person wanted? Should that person spend the money on a different dessert even though they wouldn't be fully satisfied?

If they did go for the Adama Trifle then the next time they go out for dinner they no longer have the money or room to have the Jam Zanioly-poly.

And when anybody asks them if they had a nice dinner what does the person base their reply on? Would they say "Dinner was great because it cost £100"? I think they would rate their dinner based on the quality of the food, not the value of the bill. If they wanted a steak dinner and had a steak dinner, then why is money left over a bad thing?

Don't get me wrong - I would personally prefer a RWF, CM, RWB and CB added to the squad rather than having money in the bank. But only if they are the right players. I think it's far more important to be spending money in the right way rather than rushing to spend it just for the sake of it. Our revenues and that £150m injection aren't going to turn into pumpkins at midnight.

Not only do agree with all of this, it includes the words Jam Zanioly-poly.

This did make me chuckle. Thats true the dessert might not be the one we want. I just come at if from the point of view that if according to well informed journos we had upwards of 200m to spend then why have we spent half of that. I'm not having Romero wasn't budgeted for. Most European clubs are on their knees financially. Prices aren't going to go down as these clubs get on a better financial footing.

From my point of view we are at a critical junction in our future. Fail to get top 4 this coming season and it's likely we lose Kane and Conte. That's something that I feel we would not recover from. After this season it's highly likely that the top 5 from the prem will qualify every season. With that it mind we really need to make sure we are in it at the expense of say Arsenal because they are on the verge of not being able to recover. Top 4 for them this season with us missing out will change the landscape massively

We're at a critical junction in our future every season, at a certain point if every season is a big season then none of them are. This season to me always looked to me about being the first proper year of a 2 year Conte project. Our signings have rebuilt and restocked the squad with quality in depth. It's highly doubtful we are on the verge of losing Kane and Conte, if anything what we've done is going to lead to them extending their contracts. I also don't see how given the significant upgrades we have made, the fact we have had a proper pre-season under Conte building upon the work done last year that we are in a position to be fearing making top4.

The start of this season has shown that Man United still have a long way to go, Chelsea are in a difficult transitional season and are using late deals to plug gaps, Liverpool look worse than last season, City albeit Haaland is tearing up, actually look a little more vulnerable that they have in half a decade. We on the other hand have got 2 wins and 2 draws in games that we managed a grand total of 0 points in last season so if all your fears and built upon the threat of a top4 place then I think your presupposition is built on weak foundations. I can understand us wishing we signed Bastoni and 1 more CM in the hope that we can try and take advantage of an extremely rare moment where Liverpool and City look like they need a breather from their staggering runs in recent years but when it comes to the threat of missing out on top4, I just can't see it. Arsenal look to have improved and could make top4 but I doubt it'll be at our expense.

Cheers!

As a general point (not accusing you of anything) I would say that before every transfer window journalists speculate about how much money each club will spend. They aren't sat around a table with Levy and a calculator - they are sat in their offices trying to create content that footy fans will read. I reckon £200m is an imagined number, and even if it is spot on there is no obligation to spend it.

This summer in particular there has been a lot of back-of-the-napkin stuff going on because of the £150m investment. I think a lot of people have done 150 + player sales + "champions league money" and are coming up with huge figures (up to £300m) which have no correlation with reality. Once that spend expectation is set in their own minds, when the reality fails to live up to it those people are often disappointed.

To answer your hypothetical about why we have spent 100m, I would say it's because the objective of a transfer window is not to spend as much money as possible. Or spend 100% of a theoretical war chest. The objective is to improve the squad - ideally in a way that the manager wants and that is sustainable.

I get what you're saying about a critical point, but as wrd just said we have been saying that consistently for the past 10 years (or more). I think the club hierarchy are always looking beyond tomorrow and are trying to achieve steady improvement rather than boom and bust.

I also think that the tendency of football fans is to judge their clubs in snapshots. To my mind that misses the bigger picture - and the bigger picture is where life actually happens. So whilst you might be writing off the Romero money, the people running the club cannot. They are balancing the upcoming expenses with current expenses and all the rest of the financials involved. They don't have the luxury of living in a snapshot, or running the club off the back of that napkin.

This has wandered far enough off topic to probably put a pin in for now - even though Gvardiol to Spurs is a pipe dream right now. Not trying to shut the conversation down because I think it's not worth it btw... just gonna keep my head down for the next couple of days whilst the inevitable shitstorm blows through town! Take it easy fella.

Max Eberl has given a clear rejection of an early farewell to Josko Gvardiol (20). "I am in contact with his agency, there are very transparent discussions. Our position is very clear. He will definitely not leave us in winter," said the new sporting director of RB Leipzig on Monday at the training camp in Abu Dhabi. "We are definitely planning with Josko for the next year and a half." Gvardiol, a shooting star at the World Cup and third with Croatia, has a contract until 2027.

BILD reports Spurs could activate 96M release clause on Gvardiol.

Not sure of BILD's reliability but I think we can all agree this sounds like a move Levy would definitely sanction ;)

If it is accurate, I would imagine it would mean we are getting investment.

He would be perfect for us in either a back 4 or a back 3. Him and romero would be tasty together.

This has “we tried, but Leipzig kept moving the goal posts” written all over it.

Or “image rights” will scupper the deal at the last moment.

Oh yeah this reeks of "deal too complicated to accomplish in January, but Spurs will push in the summer"

Then pretend to be shocked in June when Man City, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, etc are all pushing for him

Sounds like the Aguero offer we made when he was already a very for city, just a way of Levy saying we tried to aim big to keep fans happy knowing full well it would never happen.

The sad thing is Gvardiol, Porro and Zaniolo could be totally transformative for this team. Yes, that is some outlay but it can potentially set you up for years in 3 key positions.

We could wake up in the morning with a club announcement and him holding the club shirt; I still wouldn't believe it.
