Tottenham target Atalanta wing-back Joakim Maehle to solve their problems on the left flank with the Dane viewed as a perfect fit for Antonio Conte's favoured system

  • Antonio Conte has struggled to find a left wing-back that suits his playing style
  • Sergio Reguilon has had several injuries and Ryan Sessegnon has lacked form
  • Tottenham could target Atalanta's Maehle to solve the issue this summer
  • Maehle was part of the Denmark team beaten by England in Euro 2020 semi-final
Tottenham are looking at Danish Euro 2020 semi-finalist Joakim Maehle from Atalanta to solve Antonio Conte's problem at left wing-back.

Maehle, regarded as one of the best attacking defenders in the world, has scored nine times in 25 appearances for his country and is viewed as ideal for Conte's 3-4-3 system.

Nobody has been able to nail down a regular place on the left for Tottenham this season with Sergio Reguilon suffering injuries and Ryan Sessegnon inconsistent. At one point, the right-sided Matt Doherty had to switch flanks.

With Tottenham's Italian director of football Fabio Paratici already successfully raiding Serie A for Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur in January, he is set to return there for Maehle.

The 24-year-old twice played against Manchester United in the Champions League this season and last summer was praised for an assist against Czech Republic with the outside of his boot that set up a semi-final clash with England.

Was amazing at the Euros but looking at their recent lineups he's often behind Zappacosta(!) in the pecking order for Atalanta at LWB.

I don't know nearly enough about Italian football or Atalanta's system to know why that is. Does anyone has actually watched a bit of Atalanta this season know what's up with him? Is it a system thing or down to his form/ability?

Being danish, i might be biased, but i would really love to see this happening. He can play both right and left wingback, and he is doing it to perfection, at least for our national team. The problem for him at Atalanta is, that he doesn't have a manager that trusts him.

Kasper Hjulmand has built a tactic around our wingbacks (Mæhle and Wass) and both have been thriving under him, and i could easily see him do wonders under Conte.

Says he’s right-footed on transfermrket?

Wouldn’t think we’d play inverted wing backs?

Ridiculous stamina, can run all day long. Apparently he broke the beep test once.

Anyway I agree with my fellow Dane (obviously also biased), apart from his stamina, he has brilliant technique, speed, tenacity, he can score, cross very well. For me he's got it all. Get him in.

Conte already been using Doherty in LWB - he is not bothered about the foot of the wingback but how they can affect the play in final third.
Maehle is brilliant in both wings

Any other Danes we could be watching? Damsgaard is on the bench. There is also Laimer playing for Austria who we were looking at in the winter.

There's a fella called Christian Eriksen. He sounds like a player we could be interested in.

Sounds like a great use of resource to scout someone who has played more games for us than any other team.

must be someone else.

I don’t think there’s any harm in us having a scout there especially if eriksen knows he’s there. Shows we are still serious about him. But yeah, it’s probably for someone else.
