Im very confused by this signing also. IF all the ITK's are right, and their point that Petrov wasnt signed because Levy didnt think we could make much profit on him - then why sign Riquelme at 29 years old for 10.5m???? Petrov only cost 4.5m.

Riquelme is a great player, but i really dont think he will suit the prem league and spurs.

I think Levy saw Petrov as a stop gap player...ie one that was good enough for us at the moment but only had maybe 12-18 months shelf life with us as we would outgrow him and require a better player. Riquelme is of a different standard and is the sort of player that you would build around...a base rather than a piece if you will. but then again thats all 'ITK' rambling so could all be irrelevant

Not convinced he'd be great for us, but is a fantastic player and I would get carried away with all the excitement (TM - West Ham Utd 2006/7). However I think it's much more likely that he ends up back at Boca.

ITKs beaten to a scoop by Skysports eh? All this Jol bashing must have clouded their information.

Would be good but not gonna happen. It's just the agent taking him up, hoping for one last European pay cheque before he goes back to South America. He'll go to Boca in Jan if not sooner. Don't get me wrong, it would be awsome, even if he just past on some experience and skills to our young midfield (the Hud especially) but I can't see it.

Tottenham Hotspur are not the only English club interested in Juan Roman Riquelme, according to Sky Sports' Spanish football expert, Guillem Balague.

The Argentina international has been linked with a move to White Hart Lane but Balague warns that whoever captures his signing will have to cater for his needs.

"I believe he is in contact [with Spurs]," Balague told Sky Sports News, "and I also believe that Spurs are not the only club in England that is after Riquelme.

"He is a very special customer - you have to be sure he is happy. If that means he has to be surrounded by people who speak his language then so be it."

Having been at Villarreal for four seasons, the 29-year-old spent five months on loan to Boca Juniors at the end of last season. But Riquelme's future now remains elsewhere.

Balague also sees Riquelme's need to be the tactical focal point as a deciding factor between his next move being a success or not.

"He doesn't adapt that well with clubs that do not play for him," said Balague.

"While Villarreal played for him he was happy, but when they changed their system he wasn't, so he moved to Boca [Juniors].

"Boca don't want him anymore, so it is a huge gamble if anybody wants to take him to England."

he's gone well off the boil. moody bastard who is in dreadful form atm.

The dreadful form that made Argentina the best looking team in years at the Copa, until his teammates couldn't find a way to get it to him? Or the dreadful form that single-handedly won the Libertadores? I'm confused?

I don't think anyone would doubt that Riquelme, when he's in the mood, is a world-class player, the kind who can transform a game, indeed a whole team. But the reason I'm very hesitant about this signing is the same reason I'm opposed to sacking Jol. We don't need an upheaval at present. We don't need another "season of transition". We don't need the players to learn a completely new system under a new manager. Nor do we need to rebuild the entire tactical system around Juan Roman Riquelme.

If this all pans out and, in 2 months' time, we have Ramos managing the side and Riquelme ripping up the league, I'll happily eat my words. But it seems somewhat implausible. More likely is yet another "looking forward to next season" season.

We need a world class creative midfielder and riquelme seems to be a world class creative midfielder with in reach

get him on a 3 year 50,000 a week contract plus 1m signing on bonus for each season he stays with us

This would not break our wage structure and it would give riquelme 70,000 per week which he would be happy with

I think it was the wages, not the fee, that swung it for Citeh. ITK :)roll: ) reports were that these were £55k or more.

As the consensus earlier that this was to be a Ramos signing does BMJ staying mean that this is dead.
