Very happy to hear Spurs are interested in Romero. Top-class talent.

What I’m having trouble with is the supposed interest in Kounde. Height being a principal concern. He’s only 178 cm tall. This being compounded by Romero’s height (185 cm) which though reasonable, is less than the main PL opposition.

Man City
Stones 188 cm
Dias 186 cm

Man Utd
Maguire 194 cm
Lindeloff 187 cm

Liverpool
Gomez 188 cm
van Dijk 193 cm

A central defense of Romero and Kounde would be targeted by opposing coaches - particularly problematic on free kicks and corners. It’s not only a height disadvantage - it’s also a bulk shortcoming. It’s tougher for a lighter player to stop a heavier one, especially in a dead-ball scenario.

This could be a disaster for Spurs.
Pretty similar to Nesta (186 cm) and Cannavaro (176 cm) for Italy, one of the best centre-back pairings of the last century; Cannavaro even won the Ballon d'Or.

In Italy/Spain they play the ball on the deck mostly, I feel he would struggle in the PL if I'm being honest.

There are definitely other names I've been given that you would categorise as back up plans but they're by no means average players and most would be happy with the alternatives.

First off, thanks for the great info. You've really contributed to this site. Second, you are an optimist when it comes to this group being happy. It's not in our/their DNA.

I think everything around this is waitng on Uniteds move for Varane. If they buy him for 50m I think Real can and will go for Kounde, If that happends there is a good chance we can sell Sanchez for good money to Sevilla. Then I hope Paratici does his magic and goes for Botman :)

Botman and Romero would be somting

Height isn't everything if you have positioning and timing. Look at the bizarre number of times Lucas wins aerial duels and scores headers, and this guy is taller.

I’m surprised we aren’t already going for Botman anyway.

They signed Alaba already and think he’ll end up playing at the back.

Please stop the height issue. Its actually one of his strongest assets known in Spain. He’s got an amazing jump & positioning while defending forwards from other teams. Kounde himself has said that he is as good as Ramos in the air. Apart from this he’s fast, calm, great tecnique.. a world class CB.

Btw, Sevilla rejected 50m from City last summer before they went on to sign Dias.

People need to stop solely using stats to judge players and rely on their eyes again. If someone has watched Kounde and spotted an aerial weakness then fine, but that isn't the case. A centre back pairing of Romero and Kounde would be amazing, especially considering the state of our defence last season.

I agree. We have a 6’3 centre back in Sanchez who misreads the flight of a ball, gets lost under it and doesn’t make the header. Kounde reads it really well and is strong in the air. Would we have an issue matched up against Maguire at a corner, sure maybe but I think we would with Dier at the back too. I’m much more concerned with our defence in open play right now and Kounde would be a huge upgrade.
