We've actually been linked with Brezovan, Swindon's keeper. Given that Gus will know all about him, I wouldn't be entirely surprised if he appeared as our No. 2. I doubt that anyone on SC has seen him, though.

Where were we linked with him then old bean?

Haven't seen him but heard of him. He was rather tasty for Swindon when he first signed at beginning of Wise / Poyet era and I think he then suffered a long-term injury and the deputy (Smith or something) filled in and kept him out.

I do believe this season if my memory serves from checking match reports / lineups that he may be back in the team now though and he was quite nifty at that level (league 1 / 2). Dunno how would do in prem but all goalies need to start somewhere innit guv!

Plus Wise / Poyet (or Poyet / Wise if you believe the rumours ) seem to be quite a good judge of goalies as the one they left at Leeds, Casper Ankergren, also seems to be quite good!

I would try to get Ben Foster and kep Robbo. Perhaps genuine competition for his place might give him a kick up the backside.

Would quite like Foster but reckon Robbo's gone tbh as looks shot for us and in need of a fresh start. Shame really as I really hoped Robbo would come good but still shakey even when coming back in this season and would prob reluctantly stick with Cerny until the summer.

I'd take Scott Carson over foster or kirkland. villa don't want to pay, but Spurs have money. Then that would be robbo to villa? I don't think robbo will stand for 2nd choice anywhere.

As long as that horrible robert green rumor goes away, then we'll be fine. he's pants

Scott Carson better than Ben Foster or Robert Green?

Green has been the dbs for the most part in prem for poor teams such as Norwich and West Ham (has kept them in some games) and has an excellent record at penalties.

Ben Foster will probably end up as no. 1 at Man U not at Spurs.

I would very happily take Robert Green though as he is an excellent goalkeep - feel free to take the mickey out of me for that comment at the usual place!

i have thought for a long time jussi is a good goalkeeper but thats all he is, good. if he was a top keeper he would be a top club. he has been around for years so hardly an unknown to the prem, plus the top 4 have all needed a change of keeper during this time. he is liable to an occasional error. (R.e Gerrard v bolton) but what keeper isnt?

id love us to sign foster, kirkland, carson or amelia, kameni looks steady but havent seen too much of him and from what previous experience i have of watching african keepers they arent great.

not taking the mick outta you, so what do you think of carson? green is not a top goalie IMO - so we agree to disagree. What happened to those Stecklenberg rumors? he looks better than most keepers discussed here. Jussi is fine, of course, he was a lot better a couple seasons ago - but so was the team around him. I haven't seen amelia play but twice this season, but I read he's going to AC Milan...

Not good enough If you want to get into the top 4.
Petre Czec aside, how would you compare him to the Keepers in the so called top 4? Not necessarily disagreeing with you but this might put things into perspective.

I quite like Maarten Stekelenburg and I think there have been some links sufacing again so he would probably be my first choce.

Carson, I'm not really sure about as he just doesn't really impress me much as Green doesn't impress you.

I reckon Green is a good goalie but as you said we'll have to agree to disagree!

I find the differing opinion about Carson / Green quite interesting though and reckon I'll start a thread about English goalkeepers to see what people think.

I don't think any of the English keepers are good enough. Foster has looked good but is still very inexperienced at the highest level. Green is ok but nothing special and Carson seems to make at least one dodgy error every time I watch Villa. Plus for the £10m Liverpool want for him it would be a daft deal.

What makes a good/top goalkeeper? Someone teach me how to judge. I think its much more difficult compared to evaluating outfield players.

given the contempory game, here's my opinion on the top 4 things:

1-must be tall-roughly 188/190 or more? in order to be a great shot stopper (1st goalkeeping priority)

2-compsure under pressure - can't coach that, keeper must just "have it" to exude confidence and maintain consistency. also places confidence in players around the keeper. (example - james is not strong here)

3-positioning-this can be taught/improved over time, typically younger keepers struggle with this more than veteran keepers

4-specifically to the EPL-MUST be strong in taking the ball out of the air on corners

for many of the english keepers discussed here it's #2 that comes into question most often. although not english, I'd say van der saar is a great example of all 4 - just IMO. Jussi's weakest one here is #4 - again, just IMO. reina is weak in some of these categories, but leadership and team system take a lot of the pressure off of him. I don't view reina as a top keeper - again just IMO. please don't shoot me for trying to answer a 30 minute discussion topic in a 2 minute posting, Ole!!

BTW-FYI foster is 25, carson is 22, green is 28, jussi is 33, robbo is 28, and kirkland is 27
