Now, this is a player I'd really like to have at Spurs. But not very realistic at all. I won't lose any sleep over this story.
Hugo Lloris could be key in drawing Karim Benzema to Spurs
Hugo Lloris’ friendship with France striker Karim Benzema could be key in any potential deal Tottenham Hotspur try to organise with Real Madrid.
Spurs need an additional front man ahead of next season and Benzema could be open to a move after an inconsistent season with the current Spanish champions.
He could be more than willing to listen to Lloris as the goalkeeper seems to be one of the only French players willing to offer the striker his support at the moment, as he continues a run of 11 games for France without a goal.
Benzema’s calibre and profile in the global game is very high so Tottenham have to try and look for an advantage wherever they can because if he becomes available, there are going to be some top European teams in for him.
Support and friendship during a tough spell can often go a long way and Spurs will be hoping that means they have an obvious way in, if they want to try and talk to Benzema directly.
His current contract at Real Madrid runs until the summer of 2015 so it all comes down to how much he wants to move and how much the club want to sell, which at the moment looks debatable despite his ratio of eight goals in 22 league games.
Benzema is undoubtedly a player that would transform the Spurs attack and make them a much more dangerous unit than they already are.
At 25-years-old he will also be very appealing to Andre Villas-Boas who will not want to bring in a forward that only has a couple of years left in the tank. It’s an investment he’ll want to prosper as the side develops.
Spurs’ chances of getting Benzema will be further enhanced if they manage to secure Champions League football for next season.
The Frenchman is unlikely to leave Real Madrid at any point for a side that is not playing in Europe’s top club competition, which would rule Spurs out if they don’t finish inside the top four.
Spurs struck a 'working relationship' with Madrid after selling Modric last summer which they are yet to benefit from. Benzema would be a perfect way to move forward with that.
If Spurs have serious aspirations to try and push for the Premier League title within the next few years then this is the sort of transfer they need to try and pull off. Lloris’ friendship and support for Benzema is something which will definitely give them a better chance of getting him than they would otherwise have.
Spurs fans, would you be happy with Benzema signing?
