Keane to replace Jenas?

If the Jenas transfer request rumours are true, do you think its a strong possiblity that 'Arry will opt for Robbie Keane to play an advanced midfield role thus accomodating him, Defoe and Crouch/Pav in the same lineup.

With the ground Palacios covers in midfield, he is more than capable of covering for Keano to bomb forward and support the front two and it's not like Keano has a poor work ethic up front. He always does the team thing and track back into midfield whenever the team doesn't have the ball, which suggests he could play this role and not be a big defensive liability.

I struggle to see Keane, being captain, not playing a significant role on the pitch. If there are better in-form options at striker, then I think 'Arry will create this midfield role for Keano in order to get him into the first XI. Thoughts?

I know there have been strikers who have dropped back into midfield as their careers have progressed (Gudjohnsen, Dwight Yorke, Alan Smith?) but I am not sure that we will risk it with Keane.

He will still get plenty of chances to play in rotation with Defoe up front and I don't think we will decide to try and transform one of the top strikers in the history of the premiership into a midfielder simply because on paper at the beginning of the season he isn't first choice. Things never work out in reality how they do on paper.

When Berba first came in Keane was also second choice to Defoe, then he got a chance and developed a great partnership with Berba and the rest is history.

Sure it is slightly different because Redknapp made him captain, but I don't think Redknapp is one who will simply play players because of their reputation or status within the squad. He will pick the side on merit based on the opposition and form, in his opinion, to try and get the best result.

I can't really see Keane ever adapting to a midfield role. It is a very disciplined job and while he would get goals from that position would he offer the regular 'heartbeat' the team needs in their. Sure he looks good when he drops off the front into that deeper position but it is a very different case when you start in midfield. When he is dropping off he normally isn't picked up and is allowed more freedom. Also I am not convinced he will ever learn to put his foot in when needed and that would be a pretty big limitation in him being a decent central midfielder.

I am pretty certain that if Jenas does go (which I really hope is not the case) that we will bring in a recognised quality central midfielder. Sure Keane might get the odd game in that position (or maybe just coming off the bench their) but I can't see him being our regular replacement for Jenas.

I like Keane's attitude and some of his contribution, but... he isn't half the player JJ is. Ludicrous suggestion.

Indeed, JJ for captain... otherwise Wilson... some CM guaranteed starter.

Captains matter.

No. Palacios does a lot of his pressing quite far up the field, Keane partnering him would be suicide.

Didn't think anyone would seriously propose Jenas for captain again.

Keane's remains the natural leader of the group so until someone else steps up to the plate Redknapp will try an accomodate him. He had worked well from midfield before, and I could see it working. Keane is better coming onto the ball in front of him. I think it would work. More repeats of his Villa goal from midfield a few years ago please.

Keane in central midfield in a 442 formation is the most ludicrous thing I've heard in years.

I don't think JJ should be captain of the side either but we only have 2 natural captains in King and Woody and they both have bigger issues, so it's really not that funny as it's who's at the top of an unsuitable queue.

Quick question, are you posting today because it's the school holidays?

yes , no not really , im off work mondays
all joking aside if rumours are true and jj has handed in a transfer request why the hell do people want him to be captain
and why do people on here seem to hate keano ???
god he left then came back , he was with us for 6 YEARS before he left and scored over 100 GOALS ! who else in the last 20 years has given us service like that , teddy and mabbutt are the only ones that spring to mind.

have some faith in harry , if jj has handed in a request its because he knows he aint going to figure every week and wants to move on as the world cup is next year (not that he will play unless england get 6 injurys in cm )
as for the captain situation if harry really wants keano to be captain he will play him behind the front 2 as i think thats his best position , and that means the midfield needs to toughen up , cue the exit of our softest central midfielder , it all makes sense when you think about it !

harry gets to choose what he wants at the end of the day , not us , and it seems that his captain is keane , so i cant see him not playing

Keano isn't a good captain, no encouragement just blame from him. JJ is too quiet to be a captain. He is a pushover. No bite or tenacity about the lad.

Keano in midfield would be a disaster. Like my spelling. The OP said with the ground WP covers... blah blah blah. What he fails to mention is that 1 against 2 or 3 is inviting pressure. Imagine only WP in the centre trying to hold and Lennon and Modric on the sides tackling and Keane standing, pointing shouting. We might as well start with 10 men from the outset.

I disagree with this thread. I think Keane's best position is as an unused sub, at most.

I can see where the idea comes from, but I think a) Modric would be far better suited to the role, and b) playing Keane there would negate some of the effectiveness of Modric coming in from the left.

I'm with Flats on this....

I'm open to have my mind changed , but what would do that would be a bit of brilliance...of which there has been little sign since his return.

Most pro arguments centre on 'heart and soul ' emotional blather .

The idea that someone on fire like Defoe should be passed over in favour of a continually non performing Keane....is madness .
