What a sorry affair.

Is he right to NOT defend himself or is it easier as he has something to hide?

American Armstrong said in a statement that he is "finished with this nonsense" and insisted he is innocent but did not want to spend any further effort clearing his name.
He said: "There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, 'Enough is enough'. For me, that time is now.
"I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in winning my seven Tours since 1999."
However Armstrong's achievements are set to be wiped from the record books.
Asked what actions USADA intended to impose, spokeswoman Annie Skinner said in an email: "A loss of all results from August 1, 1998 and a lifetime ban from participating any sport sanctioned by a signatory to the WADA Code."

he clearly thinks that by doing this he hopes the evidence from his former team mates wont be released which would really harm his rep.

How long before the wider public knows he's been doping just like people who have been watching the situation do?

I think he should have kept fighting. The "evidence" from hos former team mates is from known Drug cheats who have already been banned and have more than likely been paid by corrupt French journalists.

I think I will accept the evidence from several hundred drug tests over the words of known cheats. Today is the first day that I am wearing my Livestrong wristband in a long time.

"How long before the wider public knows he's been doping just like people who have been watching the situation do? " Who? French Jounalists? I have been watching it and see nothing that shows he cheated, but then I tend to look at a the whole case before reaching judgement.

I think he blatantly cheated, same as Manny P in boxing, and Carl Lewis in athletics.
I can't believe cheaters would implicate an innocent man just to get their jollies. I agree with Al, he wants to end it now while there's still doubt.
It reminds me of the old saying about the fool
"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt."

Sure he hasn't failed any teats but the 1999 samples are dodgy to say the least.

As for the evidence from former team mates i'd agree to a point, Landis and Hamilton are totally discredited and should be ignored but the other riders who spoke to the US authorities haven't served bans and had no real reason to lie.

To me the worst evidence against him is only circumstantial but quite clear and is simply who, who hasn't been caught for doping since, got anywhere near him?

So by that logic all of your Heros must be cheats? Anyone who does well must be cheating? Now you sound like a French Journalist. I know what Bradley Wiggins would call you!;)

No but winning the biggest bike race in the world by twice as much time as Wiggins did this year against people who are confirmed cheats in an era that EPO use was rife doesn't look good.

Who knows maybe he was that much better than everyone and he will change his mind and challenge the charges and prove his innocence.

I really prefer to believe that his explanation is better. While the cheats sat at home in thet shitty weather he was out, riding his heart out.

I certainly HOPE he isn't a cheat, but if he is I want it proved, with science, not testimony. The truth needs to come out. Do they destroy these samples?

How is it clear? The evidence is already in the public domain anyway.

Have you got a link to the team mates testimony? Or a copy of the signed affidavit's that the team mates signed?

No have you? But I have seen the chairman of USADA saying ten of his (armstrong) former team mates are willing to testify they saw him taking EPO, and I have seen an interview with Floyd Landis (I think) sayings he saw EPO in his fridge and saw him injecting himself. That's public enough for me.

I haven't and won't condemn the man until I see the evidence with my own eyes.

The USADA appear to have decided Armstrong was guilty long before any evidence was present.

10 unnamed men who have been offered what in return for their testimony? Floyd Landis is a known liar and only went public with his allegations after Team Radioshack (Armstrongs team at the time) denied him a place on the team.

I never condemned him at all, if you read the first post I was defending him.

Soo those hundreds of drug tests he did are less reliable then this testimony? Bollocks. The french wanted him to test possitve for years, he didn't.

I never said you did.

I just said I wouldn't.

Why did you ask me if I had a copy of a signed affidavit then? I am sure you didn't expect me to have one.

It seems like you took my reply to al Pacino out of context, and then back tracked, I could be wrong of course.

Anyway for the record, I don't have a clue whether he took drugs or not, there is a massive weight of evidence in his favour, namely myriad urine and blood tests, both in and out of competition. On the other side there are allegations and clearly they have some weight when you consider the state of professional cycling during this period.

I would love to know the truth, I hope somewhere there are some samples that can be analysed with better techniques etc. I am a big cycling fan and thank god it OS getting cleaner all the time.
