His agent could well be playing the smart, long game. He knows they won't be able to agree a contract but he's now put it completely in Inter's hands. Then, when (and he knows this) no offer materialises and his client is 'forced' to accept Spurs the fans don't kick off at Martinez. Reputation remains intact.

It's definitely what's happening. It may even end up in him getting a big wage at Inter and being the new star man post Lukaku which I'm sure his agent would be happy with. Just smart work by his agent.

Would Martinez and Vlahovic be able to play and complement each other ?
.
I'm sure they could compliment one another. Both are familiar with the Italian language so if one says "Bei capelli" the other should understand.

Wasn't it mentioned somewhere that he's only on £45k a week or some other relatively low figure or did I imagine that? I suspect Inter couldn't/wouldn't offer anywhere near the wages we could right now - especially if we'd be shifting Kane off the wage bill.

Maybe it's just me but I never understand why players care so much about payrises.

Grown men from working class backgrounds earning 200k a week for a decade chose the Martian Super League over elite European competition because they're offered another £100k a week on top of that. As if they know how to spend that much money. Fuckers buy their furniture from IKEA.

Could be way off but Vlahovic reminds me a bit of Lukaku so they would definitely compliment each other.

Because in 1 second you could never play again from a bad injury and be left with no skills to make money outside of that since for the most part this is what they have specialized in for their entire life. I 100% think players should maximize the amount they get before their career is over

Yeah but at the level we're talking 45k a week for a five-year contract is 12 million. They've long set themselves up for generations. And that's with a very low wage for elite footballers. At £200k that's £60 million-ish. And even then, deals have fallen through over a few grand above or below that figure.

I'm not arguing they shouldn't be paid that much. Just wondering why they care that much about £100k here and there. Just seeks so insignificant, in relative terms, when making career decisions

Wouldn't the times be a good source or am I clutching at straws?

Suppose it depends on the journalist?

I think it's probably just a throwaway comment in an article more focused on Kane. No idea how reliable Tom Roddy is either.

Really hope it's something more substantial though!
So he's followed by all the usual suspects, Romano, Dan KP, Lyall, JPB, Kristo Turreur, etc.

I searched twitter to see his other stories and see about 50 people asking "is Tom Roddy reliable" for all sorts of stories so lol who knows. I don't have a Times subscription. Maybe we need to do a donation drive so we create an SC logon lol

Sorry. I don’t think it’s very exciting:

To play or not to play? For Harry Kane and Tottenham Hotspur, it’s not really the question. Manchester City’s trip to north London tomorrow offers an uncomfortable curtain-raiser for Spurs as the protagonists of this messy summer saga congregate in front of the cameras for the watching world. And yet more important than Kane’s presence, or three points, will be the result of those meetings behind closed doors between the two clubs over the following fortnight.

Having already held talks this week with Tottenham over a potential purchase of Kane, City could get a closer look tomorrow afternoon. The England captain, 28, is set to make himself available to play against the club aiming to buy him for £120 million despite only returning to full training yesterday after five days of quarantine, having delayed the end of his holiday in an attempt to push through a move.

The decision, ultimately, will be down to Nuno Espírito Santo, who spoke to Kane at Hotspur Way yesterday for the first time since becoming Tottenham’s new head coach. For a man in such limbo, Nuno has made the decision not to look too far into the future. “He’s here with us, he’s a Tottenham player,” Nuno said when asked if Kane would remain beyond the transfer window closing on August 31. “We have to think about tomorrow, tomorrow. Let’s prepare the training session of tomorrow. We go day by day.

Nuno knows his verdict will not be reached on fitness levels alone. “It’s based on many, many aspects that we have to consider,” he said. “Football players are not only professional, they are people that deal with many situations. All of us, we have our own lives. And when we make decisions I try to get as much info as I can so my decision is best for the team. Harry joined the group today. He trained. We had a talk. Of course, it’s a private conversation but everything is OK. He’s preparing himself like Bryan, like Romero, players that joined us later.”

Bryan Gil, the £20 million winger signed from Seville, and Cristian Romero, the £47 million defender bought from Atalanta, are part of the Spurs rebuild this summer. Those new foundations are far from finished with Tottenham ready to make a move for Pau Torres, the £55 million-rated centre back of Villarreal, and the negotiations to sign Lautaro Martínez for £60 million from Inter Milan progressing. It was understood last night that Torres was having serious reservations about leaving Villarreal, who, unlike Spurs, are playing in the Champions League.

“It’s always hard to improve something that is good and we have to be really, really accurate on the players we bring,” Nuno said. “We have a very talented squad but it needs to be balanced.”

And yet the club accounts would not. The addition of Torres and Martínez would entail a total outlay of about £180 million just a couple of months after Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman, said the club had to be “realistic” in the transfer market after losing £200 million in revenue during the pandemic. “We will spend but we are a self-sustaining club,” Levy said in June. “We have to be sensible.”

So how can this investment be covered? It all points towards an agreement with City eventually being reached, a would-be British record breaking the £100 million signing of Jack Grealish earlier this month.

The Kane controversy has overshadowed Nuno’s first few weeks in north London. Ten of the questions posed during yesterday’s half-hour press conference at Hotspur Way were related to the striker’s future. One suggested, quite rightly, that the situation could be distracting for Nuno’s team.

“We cannot control what’s happening outside the building,” he said. “We cannot control the news, the speculation, the rumours, all these things that surround us as a club. But we as a group of players we close ourselves. That’s the best way we have to prepare ourselves. Among us cannot be distractions. We are clear on what we have to do. We have a shield and we have to protect that shield as best we can.

“Maybe I don’t show you but I’m really excited [about the new season]. Football is about playing matches in beautiful stadiums against tough opponents that make you go beyond what you think is possible to do.”
For some, victory against Guardiola’s City may be included. Should Kane not feature, Son Heung-min is likely to have the central role in Nuno’s attack. The South Korean signing a new four-year contract at Spurs this summer has provided a positive.

“We believe with the talent he has, Sonny can do good things,” Nuno said. “Sonny is a player that has talent, energy and is versatile enough to play in different positions in the front three, being one of those in the central areas.”

Son scored the only goal of the friendly against Arsenal last weekend in a pre-season that has provided some reasons for optimism. They did not include Tanguy Ndombele, the club-record signing, who did not feature in any of the exhibition matches.
“We believe that Tanguy didn’t perform in the pre-season matches because we can see that is not the right moment for him to be with the group in terms of competition,” Nuno said.
