The latest on the Barnster is that Crewe want to loan him for a season.

You know, by the time he's done with these flippin' loan spells up and down the country he'll be in his forties...

Well, I'm just coming up to 47 - and I'm left footed. Maybe I've got a future at Spurs. :)

But I'm slower than Andy Reid. And I eat more pies.:cry::cry:

if we got £1m for him that would be an excellent deal for us you have to admit

I have to admit nothing of the sort. Maybe if we were a smaller club and £1m was the difference between surviving or not. But we're Spurs, aren't we?

Crewe have been chasing Barney for months and were confident that he would be signing on loan this week. But it has all gone a bit quiet; perhaps the Hull interest has muddied the waters, or perhaps we are reluctant to let him go just yet, what with Berbs and Bent both doubtful for Saturday. For what it is worth he did not play for the rezzies in the week.

It may even be a case of hanging onto him until the dust has settled on the Defoe situation. Or even the Berbatov situation. Nothing is straightforward at Spurs these days.

Agree with you Eddie, hold on to him for a while, with Jol staying who knows which players may hand in a transfer request.......?

If Berbs and Bent both missed Sun game - I'd rather Barney played with Keane/Defoe - than have Keane and Defoe starting together - we also may need him for Cup games soon - so, as before, I think it's up to him to stay or go

Well chase Spurs striker Barnard

Motherwell are hoping to sign Tottenham Hotspur striker Lee Barnard.
But the Scottish Premier League club's manager, Mark McGhee, admits he faces opposition from English clubs for the 23-year-old's signature.

"I have been talking to Spurs about their young striker, Lee Barnard, with a view to bringing him here on loan," McGhee told his club website. "But the player is looking at his options as there a number of Championship clubs interested." Indeed, Crewe Alexandra manager Dario Gradi said earlier this week that he expected to sign the striker before the closure of the transfer window.

Barnard is a product of Spurs' youth system but has yet to make an appearance for the English Premier League club. He has had previous loan spells with Exeter City, Stevenage, Leyton Orient and Northampton Town.

Oh dear BBC, your reporting is getting worse. Barnard has made at least one or two appearances.

Wasn't it the season before. I didn't think he played in the first team at all last season.

Injured pretty much all of the last season. Made three sub appearances the season before, including his debut a Man U where he gave Vidic a hard time, and a half against Bolton.

...and that's exactly why crap players shouldn't hang around for years and years when everyone can see that the talent isn't there.

Give him a run in the team, so we can see if the talent he undoubtedly displays for the reserves blossoms at the top level. Then IF he doesn't shine tell me he's crap.

Can't help thinking that a season free of injuries and being first choice in the League Cup and early stages of FA Cup could make a world of difference to Lee Barnard . Even get him on against some of the weaker European opposition .

Strikers thrive on confidence and a large part off what they do is instinctive and subconscious .

If 5 years ago Milner had joined Spurs and Barnard had joined Leeds then it's not hard to imagine that their current situations would be reversed .

Does anybody else think Barney may be hanging on to see what happens to Defoe? If Jermain stays then he may as well go to Crewe on loan, but if Jermain goes then Barney is 4th striker and so he must figure on getting some playing time.

If he does go to Crewe I bet he'll want a get out clause in January in case Jermain goes then.

Personally I can't see Jermain Defoe being here in January if he doesn't sign a new contract and Barney must see it the same way.

Anyone agree?

I would have liked to see Barnard given a chance but realistically he isn't good enough and he is only one year younger than Defoe. If we're not going to use him, we should let him go.

If Barnard hangs around for too much longer, he'll get a spot with the masters 5-a-side team.

If he were any good, he would have beenplayed or snapped up. his loan spells have not extactly covered him in glory.

The old chestnut about his loan spells. These were all short term and in most cases when he was very young, and before the appointment of Clive Allen, from whose coaching he has benefited enormously. In each case, whether because of injury to himself or the unexpected recovery of the player he was brought into cover, he did not get run of a games. In the course of his career he has had three major injuries, which have disrupted his development and the timing of which have prevented him either making the first team squad or securing major loans. He has not been a lucky player, but the jury is still out on whether he is a good one. He has a goalscoring record of close on 100% for the stiffs and did not look out of place during his brief first team appearances. The fact that we keep renewing his contract and that other clubs are anxious to secure his services, suggest that he may have something to offer.

My own feeling is that even if he is not absolutely top draw as a player, his temperament makes him ideal for a fourth choice striker.

The way he performed when he came on for Keane at the Lane the season before last, you'd have thought it was him that Sven had come to see, not Defoe (who performed one of his Lord Lucan acts, and then wondered why he wasn't selected for Germany). He also gave Vidic no end of trouble. I think up until then Jol had been over-cautious about playing him, but he made it very clear Barney had proved himself, and there's no doubt he would have made a few first-team appearances last season if he hadn't got himself injured.

I agree....good for barnard, he has more than proved his worth to be 4th choice...
