Apart from we have zero good refs in prem??????
Oliver is a good ref, and will be used by UEFA in the next Euros, and FIFA at the next World Cup (Qatar}
Pretty sure he was too young to be considered for this World cup, as they were selected at the beginning of the qualifiers , which was 2 years ago.
You might not agree but that's the long and short of it I'm afraid.

But it's quite damning that the Premier League only has one referee who most consider up to scratch on the big stage.

I've been to a masterclass/talk given by Mark Clattenburg about refereeing at the top level, and he was very concerned with the burnout some refs like Oliver might be subject to. Jumping from big weekend game to European fixture midweek to another big weekend game to high-profile internationals, basically always reffing spotlight fixtures, is extremely taxing and the chance of mistakes are obviously much higher the more tired the ref is. Clattenburg specifically mentioned Oliver as the most trusted referee these days and that he as being given too many big games, and was worried it would start affecting his performances.

Need to bare in mind that Clattenburg is an utter prick though who's every word should be treated with disdain.

He really isn't that bad in person.
I think he's as bent as a £3 note.
Sure he comes across as a nice guy, especially in that situation and to be fair my opinion of him doesn't mean what he said is wrong.
I just loathe the twat lol.

Yesterdays text conversation with my mate who's a Liverpool fan.

Me: Did you see the Liverpool Game?
Him: Saw the first half, we were proper shit. But 3 points at palace is gold for us, so I'll take it.
Me: Had to be Salah that got the winner late on.
Him: Best player in the prem mate.
Him: Soon to be the 10th best in La Liga.

They're not all deluded!

On the subject of Oliver and over-using and tiring out the best refs I think he was and is absolutely bang on the money. He has a clear disdain for Mike Riley though which can cloud his opinion of PGMOL but he does have some geniune and valid concerns of how PGMOL run things and the standard of refereeing in the country.

Anyway, this is the Liverpool thread, not the referee thread, so I'll leave it there.

It's not just PL refs, if any of you watch other leagues they are equally as inept, the standard of refereeing all around the world is shit.

Wasn't a very good performance from Liverpool though.
They would have had their mind on the CL. It was a fixture they could have easily lost.
Now they look odds on top 4 and there is only one spot left.

At the other end Crystal palace are in a lot of trouble, with just 6 games left.
Maybe there are 3 worse teams, but west Ham would really have to go out their way to plummet past both palace and southampton to claim a relegation spot now, and that is a shame.

Is it? Or is it actually a pretty hard job when you're down on the pitch and have to make an instant decision without replays etc?

Seeing as the standard has got worse over time I'm gonna go with the fact that the majority of refs are just not that good anymore.

“It was no dive. Diving is without contact,” Jurgen Klopp said after the game. “There was contact, 100 percent. The player wants to carry on, and then you see you can’t, so you go down. He didn’t wait for the contact, he felt it. Everybody saw it.”

Oh. Dear.

The perception that standards have got worse for me comes down to that the game over the last 20 years has just got fitter and faster, and that this makes the ref's job a lot harder than it used to be even though they're not actually in worse shape or worse schooled than previous generations of refs. It's more that the progression in referreeing standards hasn't managed to keep up with the progress made in the game itself.

And that every mistake is highlighted by the managers and the media now. 20 years ago mistakes by the ref were mostly accepted as part of the game.
