It was an understrength BVB team but I thought it was an impressive dis[lay given some of the disappointing performances we've seen thus far this pre-season, although this was the first time we've played almost a full strength team (hard to know what our "full strength team" actually is though ATM as still have Markovic & Lallana to get fit & looking to sign another tvp class ST if we can find one available - I'm ignoring the Cavani paper links).

Coutinho has looked immense this pre-season against the better teams we've played this pre-season and was head and shoulders above every player on the pitch this afternoon. If he can carry this form into the season proper, he could find a new level and have a fantastic season).

Despite Lovren and Manquillo impressing on their debuts today, our defence still looks less than secure. Maybe swapping Skrtel for Sakho would help but I believe its tactical/coaching and we'll still display the same defensive weaknesses and mistakes as last season and this will cost us a top 4 place.

The attacking play and passing & moving was really good though, reminded me of Arsenal I hate to say, but it did, so trying to stay focussed on this and keep positive & optimistic, but looking at this seasons competition its really hard to do so and see any future cause for celebration. This season getting 4th would really feel like winning a trophy.

Pre season optimism gets to all of us fella don't worry. I like the attempt to sound grounded at the end to avoid committing yourself on a public forum.

Losing to Utd last week 3-1 and it was meh, meaningless pre-season rubbish. Now they win 4-0 against a painfully weak team in another pre-season game and it's whoa hey we're gonna win it all!!! Make your bloody minds up already

TBH there aren't many strikers you can attract that are top class, I would say this is who you can get:
Balotelli
Martinez
Bony
Benteke

All of these players have their own problems as well

Liverpool wil not finish in the top four.
They will finish above us tho, I think it will take a while before we start clicking as I really haven't seen anything to write home about from our friendlies. Some good individual performances but what with half the team still recovering from the WC, Poch seemingly not 100% sure on his preferred 11 and the team still a while away from getting to grips with the tactics, I would be surprised to see us finish higher then 5/6 considering the other teams we are competing against and how they have strengthened thus far.

Well if we finish 5 then we will be above L'pool because they will not make the top four.

I think that's right. As with this time last year, people seem to be underestimating them. It may have only been a friendly but they look a far more cohesive unit than we do. Schalke was promising but we've got a long way to go IMO, and unless something changes I think we'll struggle to get top 4, for which there is no shame, but expectations should be realistic

meh, remember when we did roma 5-0? pre-season means nothing, especially when you're playing a team that's got 8 first-teamers missing.

we'll see come may even though those morons are convinced they're going to win the universe now.

I like how when we beat Celtic's second string the headlines were "Tottenham beat under strength Celtic", yet there's virtually no mention that Dortmund were nowhere near full strength just in case anyone still has any doubts that Liverpool are the most amazingest team ever.

This is true. But more staggering is how quickly it's been forgotten that Liverpool were well beaten by United in the US in the closest they've come to a competitive fixture.

I think they'll be excellent again at times during the season but the extra games and no Suarez will make them more hit and miss than their fans expect.

As i've said on other posts, let the media continue to cream over Liverpool. It will be more fun to watch the meltdown when they turn on them if they fail to live up to top four this year and they go back to being insignificant. Then the RAWK conspiracies begin!!

As for us, the less media attention we get the better. Hopefully we will just go out there this season and play good football. If we can get our record points total under AVB and be one point off last year with the shambles of a season it was (even though we ended up in Europe and one point off our record EPL total), I'm very hopeful of MP being able to lead our team this year to more points without the pressure of being in the light of the media.
