This came out last year in November and everyone thought it was Greenwood because the report was a player in the Manchester area, guess we know who it was then, false imprisonment though, Jesus

I have a colleague who knows a lot of Manchester based journalists and he told us back then it was Mendy who was in trouble even if the name wasn't out at the time. The Greenwood allegations were ridiculous, that was just internet bullshit catching wildfire.

But holy cow, if this has been an almost year long investigation and now coming out with those trial details the police must be extremely confident.

Also ridiculous if you read the Prem star in his 20s part in the headline and Mason isn't even 20 yet.

Oof. Not good.

You can pretty much guarantee his defence will be that he will be unable to have a fair trial. Media will be vultures all over this.

All investigations of serious offences go on longer than you'd think. Most of the non high profile cases I worked on where we knew who it was after 24 hours still took 8 months or more to investigate properly and charge.

Just that he's been charged mean the CPS is confident of a conviction.

Just reading the bbc article, and city paid £52 million for him! Assuming they cancel his contract, that’s a hell of a loss to put against their FFP concerns.

Imagine announcing Ronaldo while this is going on. In a bit of a pickle now!

Awful if it was him who the rumours were about last year, with the police involved, and the most recent allegation here was this month. Clearly undeterred.

I'm not very familiar with British legal terminology but when the police statement says
Mendy, of Withinlee Road, Prestbury, has been remanded in police custody and is set to appear at Chester Magistrates’ Court on Friday 27 August.
does that mean the trial starts tomorrow or is there some kind of pre-trial custody hearing they have to undergo first?

It's a hearing to decide whether he gets bail or is remanded in custody until the trial. Trial likely won't be for months yet.

Yeah this is just the first step, he’ll go up before a judge where it’ll be determined if he’s held in prison until the trial date, or whether he’s given bail. I’d imagine given the charges, he’ll be held in prison.

It'll be a hearing to decide whether he is safe to be out until trial, or needs to be in custody until then. (I think don't quote me on it),

Chelsea got money back from Mutu after his 7 month drugs ban.....£15 million. So there is precedent for clubs suing players for damages, although it has taken years.

In which case I even more strongly disagree with his name being dropped so long before trial, a hearing like that involving someone of that kind of profile has to be kept under wraps as well as possible.

Guarantee as you said above that his attorneys will use the lack of fair trial argument, he's basically being tried, sentenced and all but executed on social media in this very moment.

Do they really need to mention “over 16”. It just adds fuel to the fire.
