Ahem I seem to recall winning the UEFA cup first time we entered it... privileged to have been there.... watch from about 9 minutes as I haven't quite embedded it properly...In fairness, when we first made the Uefa cup we were pretty rubbish, and considering West Ham is really a small club in England with very little experience of winning anything, or playing high level football, this was always likely to happen - they were simply a fish out of water. You wouldn't expect a fish to be able to ride a bike properly, and you wouldn't expect West Ham to be able to play European football properly.
They also didn't qualify via actually being any good at playing football, so the writing was on the wall even from the start.
Their fans should feel privileged to have been able to see their club playing against a team like Astra, even if ultimately the gulf in quality between the two sides proved too much to surmount.
If you think about the fans of other clubs that are similar in size, success and status to West Ham, they would have been really excited to be a part of that European journey, however short.
I think if their team and fans can hold onto that feeling, of what it is like to compete with such teams on the grand European stage, and use it to drive themselves forward, then I see no reason why they can't survive the drop or even continue their recent run of excellent league finishes for a club of their stature.
