I know back in 1981 we got a caution for fielding a weak team, midweek match before the cup final (I think against Southampton). I don't remember if we were fined.

Yep, it was Wolves back in 2010. £25,000 Suspended fine which would be nothing to United when they estimate missing the Champions league would cost them £50M.
