There's been an element of lucky dips or possibly the old amusement arcade grab machine about some of them.

Honestly the best description of our recent policy I've yet seen. Just grab and hope they turn out to return investment. Southampton had an overhaul, but did the exact opposite. They didn't buy expensively, they just had a clear plan with realistic options and they went for them. Just goes to show it really isn't that difficult, and is a much more rewarding transfer policy.

A column from Tim on Southampton's formula for success. The inevitable puff of self-promotion apart, there is not much directly about Spurs, but I suspect a contrast with the Southampton model can be inferred. He also talks about how it is important that the Sporting Director role should be properly defined and accountable - I seem to recall that when asked in a press conference to explain Baldini's role at Spurs Tim floundered.

For example, if you are after a quick, dynamic striker, there is no point being offered a big, slow target man simply because he happens to be available.

Yep sounds like Levy all right.

Levy's had over 10 years to learn and perfect our transfer strategy.

If he doesn't understand it by now he never will.

That's kind of what Sherwood wanted to do.

I didn't have much time for him as a manager but he was right about a lot of things in retrospect. The same players he was scathing about have let down three different managers now and are quickly becoming lost causes. Hopefully Poch will get the time to go through the revolution we need at the club

He won't and he can't perform any revolution with Levy in charge. Levy's problem is his ego, he thinks of himself as a great DOF, he isn't.

By DOF, do you mean Director of Football or Director of Finance?

I think the confusion between the two contributes to the problem.

Has anyone read the nowhere men it is about football scouts and there is quite a bit about a scout called Mel Johnson who worked for spurs but was moved on when Harry came. He went with comolli to Liverpool and scouted Sterling for them in a game in Tim Sherwoods back garden. Great book well worth a read.

How so?

They get a lot of their youngsters from their large catchment area, being the biggest of the local clubs including Bournemouth and now that Portsmouth are a joke, and didn't Koeman manage Pelle at Feyenoord? I think you can get caught up a bit in the whole 'Southampton are a lesson to us all' hulabaloo.

They also have part of their academy in Bath, which then extends their reaches into the South West and Wales.

Saints have found the likes of Bale, Walcott, Chambers, Shaw, Ox to name but a tiny handful over recent years

How many of our home grown talents have gone on to be huge successes? Judas and King thats about it

Saints scouts, catchment area or not, are amazing spotters of talent
If you are including Chambers & Shaw, then for us you should include Kane, Mason, Bentaleb & Townsend.

None of those 4 have become huge successes though yet

Bentaleb is not getting a look in under Poch, Mason is showing early promise but it is just that atm, Kane is a bit part player with potential and Townsend is too dumb to be a top class footballer

Whereas Chambers and Shaw and Ox and Walcott and Bale are proven premiership performers

Bentaleb is and has been injured for a while now I think?

I think our Club biggest problem isnt the scouting, the players or even the transfer strategy

Our biggest problem is the expectation. We seem to refuse to accept that the team can be in transition . We want immediate results. Look at AVB ..sack after 1 year with a brand new team. Poch getting a lot of flak now for the same reason. Some how the supporters are unable to accept that it takes time for a team to gel and perform or get use to a new boss' idea

No matter how good our scouting is, if the players are not given time it would be hard for them to blossom. Bale was almost sold. Modric was getting stick for ages

I think once we come to terms that we are no longer one of the elites and are able to accept we are one of the chasing bunch, all our plans might actually have time to come to fruitation

Maybe because of Saints this year with a new team and manager, or Everton last season under a new manager. Some think because these were/are doing really well we should be able to as well.
