Unbelievable! 18m was an absolute steal! I guess he sees more value in overpriced attacking midfielders (siggy and Dempsey) than world class strikers...

Meanwhile we were offering £14million for a unproven striker in Brazil but couldnt stump £18mill for a proven European striker

I was going to say that saying no to Lewandowski years ago isn't a biggie, until JJ said what he said. £18m isn't too bad to pay for a player of his ability. But hindsight is lovely. If I told you yesterday we could have had him for £18m some people would wonder whether he is worth that much. So 4 goals in a CL semi can elevate price expectation.

For me the biggest loss was turning down Suarez. I don't know if the rumours are true, that Harry thought he was too similar to VDV but if they are I hope his dog gets turned down for the next bank account it opens.

Isco before Malaga, Lewandowski before Dortmund, Moutinho before Porto, Cavani before Napoli were all affordable. They were not pipe dreams. They were not at the top end of the market like they are now.
For every one of Isco, Lewandowski and Moutinho there were probably thirty other players who we were 'offered' and who were at a similar level of ability and stage of development and who have disappeared without trace.

It's easy to bemoan the ones that we are alleged to have missed out on when they have become stars. It's not so easy to identify the ones who will make it before it happens.

he is one of the strikers along with suarez who always find new ways to get the better of defenders, also amazing ability. I was saying we should sign him last summer but you know levy.

You can see he was something special by how he plays

Every club on the planet apart from Dortmund didn't take a punt on him, who cares? Can't win them all! Look at Bale, we took the punt.. Win some lose some. :)

That's a good point.

Although you could also say that the reason Dortmund are where they are today is because they took a punt on the right players. They must have excellent scouts, although I also don't think that any of those players could be as good as they are now without the help of the coaches at Dortmund.

All the talk last summer and during the Euros was of Lewandowski joining Manchester United. It was breaking news at the start of the Euros. BVB were adamant that he was NOT FOR SALE and that they wanted him for a serious assault at the CL. Some how I doubt very much they would have sold one of their prized assets and stars of the 2011-12 season so cheaply or even to us. Anyone who has a passing interest in German football would tell you that.

The real fuck up was not signing him in 2010 but the past regime turned down many other class strikers instead sticking with Peter fucking Crouch, Jermain purple patch Defoe and Pav....

No scouting network?! Half our fucking team made their names at Spurs. Walker, Naughton, Dawson, Vertonghen, Kaboul, Ekotto, Rose, Lennon, Huddlestone, Holtby, Sandro, Sigurdsson, Bale, Defoe are all the type of signing we apparently don't make according to some. Modric and Berbatov before them. Fans of most clubs in the Premier League look at us with jealousy and say that they wish they could be in our position. Nothing is ever enough for some. Yes we can aspire to be better, but don't act like what we are doing isn't pretty impressive. Get a bit of perspective.

Back in the 60s we scouted John White and in the 70s Glenn Hoddle. The last player we "scouted" was Sandro. Since then our scouting system seems to have amounted to recommending a series of strikers we can't afford. We have obviously needed strikers since Berbatov's departure and yet our global network has turned up nothing. Worse still our chief scout, albeit a pretty useless one other than finding Sandro, left last summer and still hasn't been replaced so we seemingly have no scout in place.

Of course if you think the role of a scouting network is to "unearth" hidden gems like Ajax's captain when he is Holland's player of the year then we have very different views on the role of such a function at the club. In fact if that is your view we should add that unknown French player we signed in goal because I have to admit he is pretty tasty.

Turning down Suarez because our scouts thought he was too similar to VdV isn't a rumour it comes from a direct quote from our illustrious former manager. Just shows you what a lousy judge of a player Ian Bloomfield was / is, no doubt he was the genius who scouted Samba at Anzhi.

Holtby is German U21 Captain, played for Germanys second biggest club (as far as membership goes), a club who also got through to the knock-out stages of the Champion's League, beating sides like Arsenal to get there and had at the age of 22 already played three games for the German national team. Sly bit of business from Levy's side, yeah, but Holtby was not an unknown player when we signed him.

Neither was sig, and Walker/Naughton were in the team of the year for the championship, vertonghen.. "_".. Sigurdsson had an amazing season last year...

Hindsight is a fucking wonderful thing.

Where's the list of players no one has ever heard of, the players who have ended up playing for Outer Mongolia United that we also turned down?

Not sure that we 'scouted' Johnny White. He was recommended by Dave Mackay who had played with him in the Scottish side (at a time when Scotland had a pretty good team). Glenn Hoddle was allegedly recommended by Chivers. Perhaps we should use our players as the scouting network.
