I don't understand how the Diaz / Mendes fiasco could have happened in the way that has been suggested. I'm not saying I don't believe it, but I don't understand how there wasn't a legally binding contract between Diaz and his agent that prevents Mendes from sticking his oar in. Surely an agent either represent a player or they don't, so how can Mendes just choose to represent someone . If he was only "representing" Porto, not Diaz, I don't see how this would impact on the fee due to Diaz's agent, so this shouldn't have been a blocker...right?

I hate how much power agents have within football and how little governance there is.

Diaz will flop! :) At least I am allowed to hope he will!
We're all hoping! ;)

He's scored more league goals so far this campaign than in the last two seasons combined, so his perceived market value has probably doubled in the last few months. It could be a purple patch (meaning his value drops back down once his form returns to normal), or he could have stepped up to the next level - which is very believable for a player in his mid-20s.
Even if his current level is sustained, he would need to step up that level again (significantly so) to replicate the same goal & assist stats in the PL. Most of his current opposition are Europa League / Europa Conference League level. Vinicius achieved fairly comparable scoring stats in the Europa League and domestic cups, yet there was no way we were going to pay the £45m option to buy...which is how much Liverpool is reporting paying for Diaz.

Might prove to be a great signing, but it's certainly not guaranteed.

I know international football doesn't always translate to league form, but he hasn't looked all that in his last 2 matches for Colombia. Let's hope that continues

4 goals in 8 games at Copa America, including a goal against each of Brazil & Argentina in KO games, was good. Outside of that, he has only 3 goals in 25 caps.

In the Primeira Liga, he only scored 1 in 5 until this season. Is a 25 year old worth £45m after only 6 months of performances that are representative of a player who's anything better than average?

I was excited about the prospect of us signing an in-form attacker from under the noses of our rivals, but I was also worried about him potentially being no more prolific than Moura (who I rate, but really wish he could reproduce his 15 goals from 2018-19).

Yep, Copa America and half a season breakout.

Think many have sat up and took notice this season as a result of the type of goals he's scored.

Certainly think he'll have to step up further again to replicate in the Premier league.

Anyways, feck 'em, not our problem.

I never really read it as that is what has happened, looks like either we or Porto contacted Mendes to to do the deal on our behalf. So either he was acting for us or for Porto or for both, looks like we cut out the Colombian agent which came back to bite us. But from everything I've read it looks he was asked to be involved

That's what really caught the world's attention. All the goals were class. I hope he's shit, and I could definitely see his goal scoring curtailed in the prem, BUT I think he's got too much to his overall game to be a complete flop unfortunately. Hopefully I'm wrong and the Portuguese league has embellished his actual skills.

I think people are trying hard to find reasons to be happy we didn't get him. Clutching at straws imo. He's quality and although he's only just started adding the number of goals he has, he's always been an exciting creative player that makes things happen. It's a big miss unfortunately, but he's not a one off, and there are other ways and players that can compensate for what he offers.

He's absolute mustard. No use trying to lie to ourselves about it. Gutted.

I hate losing him to Pool more every day. Those bindippers really piss me off in ways no other clubs can.

True but you never can tell. Havertz and Werner looked like the real deals in the BL but haven't really translated that form over here, same for Lukaku and SA.
Saying that I think he'll smash it. He's got that grinta, which none of the others have/had.

If you could play out Luis Diaz signing for Spurs in a parallel universe you all know he'd flatter to deceive yet rip it up with Liverpool.

That is how this works.

And why we love Spurs so.

Yeah I reckon he'll absolutely tear it up at Liverpool but I'm not convinced he was a natural fit for our system/squad under Conte.
