Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea have made approaches for Luke Shaw, the Southampton left back, in the hope of exploiting the managerial uncertainty at the South Coast club.

Mauricio Pochettino, the Southampton manager, gave his support yesterday to Nicola Cortese, his executive chairman, who has threatened to leave unless he receives the backing of the trust that owns the club. “I would not understand staying in this role if Nicola was not here, he has been the one that has placed his trust in me,”

How much truth is this?

Mirror are saying we're interested as well. It's at the end of the bale signing a new contract story. Story makes sense because believe we are in for a LB but could be a journo trying to put two & two together

Archie on SO did say a few months back that we were working on this deal and were the front runners, iirc...

Ben Pearce@BenPearceSpurs
#thfc AVB on Shaw: "...but it doesn’t mean there is direct interest from Tottenham in the player. But he’s a wonderful footballer for sure.”

Ben Pearce@BenPearceSpurs#thfc AVB on Luke Shaw: "Any player who makes a breakthrough at the age that he has is absolutely unbelievable..."

I read this as a 'maybe' but early stages, way off being done and may never be done

Would be an unbelievable signing if we pulled it off. Already performed at a good level at such a young age. Give that raw material to the coach team we've assembled and the facilities we have and the sky would truly be the limit. Would depend if Chelsea were willing to throw stupid money at him or not.

If it came down to between us and the Chavs he'd be well off looking at what happened to the last young left back who went from Southampton to Spurs.

That won't really solve our LB problem now though would it? ;)

Hmm seem's an interesting prospect for sure, the fan's certainly rate him highly talking £15m-£20m+.None appear to have a scooby doo what the issue with Cortese is, lot's of speculation though could range from the trust not having as much faith in the Saint's project or atleast not as much as the Markus Liebherr chap did.Could be about availible fund's for the season ahead now their safe, most believe it's a mountain from a mole hill or atleast hope it is.Anyway regard's Shaw apparently he's a level headed kid,but don't stop their fan's getting twitchy.Which lead's me to a question as I hope someone better eductaed will have an answer.

They say he has agreed a pre contract with them which takes effect on the 12th of July, some poster's claim it is legally binding other's say it's not since At 17 Shaw is classed as a minor meaning under contract law he isn't classed as competent For the contract to be legally binding, when he turns 18 he's classed as an adult and any contract he signs becomes valid. The club's offer of a contract to Shaw is however legally binding. So until he signs that proper contract he can still decide to go elsewhere.

So the question is this pre contract legally binding or not?

Oh and to add it's understood the contract will be the same as another prospect Ward-Prowse (5 year deal) They seem to have a conveyor belt of rapid wide players. Some already think should Shaw leave another kid called Matt Targett will rise up like a phoenix from the ashes.

came here to post the same...he's been very up front about it on his twitter account...can only see one winner I'm afraid if that lot make a bid

at 17 you'd think he'd go were he'd get the best chance at developing but I guess like most footy players he'll follow the money trail even though we'd hardly be offering him peanuts

To me, the biggest holdup would be the cost.

I think he's going to be incredibly expensive, which would be hard to justify at this point. He's definitely got talent, but do you think he's worth more than Fabio Coentrao?

Also, I'm not entirely convinced that he's THAT much better than Ben Davies, who is also a teenager but one that has played for a club higher in the league table and one that won the Capital One Cup.

I'd be happy with either. What do you reckon the Shaw cost would be? I'm not sure I recall any numbers posted. But if it's Davies for £10m vs Shaw for £15m, I think we know which way to go. But if Levy gets Shaw on an heavily incentivized deal, then I think we should.

I think the £15m figure for Shaw sounds right. I know Davies would be less. Whether it'd be cheap enough to sway us toward Davies as opposed to Shaw is probably the biggest question. At this point, I'm actually a bigger fan of Davies than Shaw. I think he could step right in and play at a level that we require.

Yeah this is want I can't get my head round, Shaw might be a good prospect but he still is very much a prospect but talking around £15 mill it's probably not much different to what we might be able to get Coentrao for and he's proven quality, experienced and capable of playing lb, lm or lw if need be although his strongest position is lb. The thing is he can come in and do a job now and a consistent job and I have to say if as I believe we will play more 4/3/3 next season he would be the ideal player to boost our attack and provide extra pace and width whilst still having the ability to get back and defend well.

I think all young players will go through a bit of a see saw period as they develop, Micah Richards, Glenn Johnson for example both hugely rated early then went through a very dodgy spell, some seem to think Johnson is still goin through one

I can't help thinking that unless a deal for Shaw is made up of about half the money in add ons making him a lot cheaper up front cost and risk then Coentrao would be a far better target, OK Shaw is younger but Coentrao is only 25 so will still command decent resale value

He'd be best off developing at Southampton to be honest

Personally not a massive fan of his but I think he's been good this season, best English RB this year anyway
