Im still not sure adults should wear footy shirts but thats for another day.

Why would you want to have a name on the back anyway? Isnt that for kids who want to pretend theyre that player? Just write 'man-child' on the back an be done with it. Or possibly 'this cost me £60' for an ironic/moronic approach.

So no, i wouldnt have Gerrards or Lampards name on the back...

agree, not sure an adult really needs a name on the back to support his country.

Walking down the road a few months back (Belfast) and this fella is walking towards me on the other side of the road with a France top on...still hurting from our dubious exit at the hands of the French I'm aghast that any clear thinking Irish man would be wearing a France football top. I almost felt like giving him grief, but refrained...not really my thing to abuse strangers, but did feel like it.

However, as he passed I took a quick look back just to confirm what i'd saw.. and how glad was I?

I'll be supporting every team France play, and honestly hope they don't make it past the group stages.....

Ive always seen it as a chance to support someone you dont have a chance to see at club level. Back in the day a new England shirt was a chance for me to get Beckham on the back, and at the last world cup I had Lampard on the red top.
Dont get me wrong I do like to boo these players when theyre playing for thier respective clubs, but I personally think that the likes of Gerrard, Lampard, Becks and Rooney are legends and when they pull on the 3 lions Ill give them 100% support.
Not so much for Ferdinand, Terry, A Cole and Campbell though......

You might have answered this, but I'm too lazy to read everything: If he's a Utd fan, why get Gerrard instead of Rooney?

Its club before country for me as well tbh, so if I was going to get a name on an England shirt, it would be one of our lads and if we had no Spurs players in the squad, I'd leave it blank.

And anyone suggesting putting your own name on the back, just no ffs, no one wants to see a top with 'John' 9 on it, you look a tool

Me and a good friend had a rather heated debate last night regarding his decision to put a player's name on the back of his England Shirt.

The player in question is Steven Gerrard... no big deal? ...he's a United fan.

Obviously I see this as lunacy. For him as a United fan to have the captain of Liverpool on his back for the summer just seems crazy to me.

His argument was that the season is over and it's now all about England, clubs mean nothing at this point. I argued against this by saying, for example, I could not have Lampard on my shirt. Despite rating him as a player, I couldn't ignore the fact that I disliked him and his team for the 4 years between tournaments and that I can't just turn off that bitter distain for all things Chelsea because he's got a different top on.

He claims this is 'sad' and 'pathetic' and it should be all about England and to him, Gerrard is world class, one of our best players and only that should matter.

Am I being sad and pathetic when I struggle to ignore my deep rooted hatred for the clubs these guys represent, despite the fact that it's England?

I reckon your mate is a bit of an idiot, here's why:

1.) Gerrard is a nob, he's not guaranteed a starting place in the WC team and if it were up to me i'd doubt i'd have him in my first team.

2.) Rooney is by far our most entertaining player and is guaranteed to start every game if fit and he's a Utd player - so get Rooney on you shirt.

3.) Ferdinand plays for Utd and is the damn England captain.

I could understand it if he didn't have at least one guaranteed first teamer from his own club playing for England this summer, but to me it makes no sense.

I'll probably get one with Lennon, King or if he gets there Huddlestone on it. At a time there's so many Spurs players around the England team I'd feel wrong to get any other player!

Four years ago I had Lennon 19 on the back, only saw one other person wearing it- Titus Bramble, I couldn't make it up!

As for Spurs shirts I don't get any names on the back after Barmby, Sheringham and Klinsmann all left the following season! I have got Bentley on the back but he's yet to leave

Your mate sounds like he may have voted BNP in the recent election

I'm with you though Kendall. Club over country at all times. I'm actually struggling to get enthused by this World Cup because there are so many players I dislike in the England squad.

I can offer two possibilities:

1) Man Utd 'fans' are rarely real fans. I've been to Old Trafford more times than any Manure 'fan' I know. That must make me a bigger Manure fan than them, and I hate the c***s.

2) Sports Direct usually have a rack of Gerrard England shirts in odd sizes for a fiver long after all the Rooney shirts have sold out. Maybe his mate is a pikey.

As for the names on shirts thingy, I was actually thinking of getting a Beckham shirt until he got injured. Reason being he is the most passionate England player and would walk across dogshit covered shattered shards of glass placed on a bed of hot coals to play for his country.

Since his injury I thought about getting an Azza shirt but with Capello starting that donkey from the Wanderers the other night I'm getting worried that Capello is a sham. Maybe I'll get a King shirt to be sure, to be sure. The only non-Spurs player I think I could wear without feeling sick would be Rooney.

And to those whining about adults not growing out of wearing football shirts, maybe you'll grow out of judging people by the clothes they wear some day ;)

I am thinking of getting the home GK shirt with Green on the back. this is mainly because my surname is Green and I play in goal. General thoughts? I know west ham hate us, but personally I dont find them enough of a threat to take seriously, and pretty much 'nothing' them.

never seen the point in putting a players name on a shirt at all, your own name or nickname yes - but players move club all the time - fans don't

Go for it, I was gonna do that with the England cricket shirt with "Joyce" a few years back.

It is a bit childish getting a players name on the back of your shirt, but the child in me always considers it but I've managed to hold off for a few years. Last name I had done was King and a few Keano's before that, and if I did get one done next season they would be the only 2 I'd want.

But getting the name of a rival on the back? Even on a neutral England shirt is just mental, each to their own, but I'm happy with my tribalistic attitude here.

I've considered getting a Spurs shirt with Bentley on the back as it's my surname. Soemthing's stopping me. Perhaaps the fact he hasn't really done it for us yet. Although he's had a few moments.
