Regrettable that now there'll probably more interest in his signature and a higher fee.

Pretty much the problem with not wanting players until they're proven. When they're affordable we don't want them, and once we want them they're too expensive.

He'll still be available for a non-extortionate fee, bridges with Wolfsburg have been too thoroughly burnt.

Think he'd do very well in the PL, decent touch, can hold it up, powerful and can finish with his head or feet - seems perfect to me. Though, no doubt, there are others that have seen far more than me that can offer a better opinion

I reckon he and Dzagoev look like the interesting "zero to hero" punts in the Euros so far. Would like to think that a new manager coming in will have the chance to spend some cash and a statement of intent is needed if the mutterings about Bale, Modric etc wanting progress are to be believed. I'd like to think that an extra £5m on the fee for Mandzukic would be offset by Modric seeing a talented Croatian joining the club (I seem to remember statements about the importance of having other Croats around being important in the past - with Corluka and Kranjcar having left [or about to go] it may be a very shrewd move if we want to keep Luka).

Mandzukic can be frustrating, but he can also be a beast/match-winner.

When he's up for it, he's a handful for any defense. Doesn't let you breathe. Magath said that Mandzukic had the energy to play two full matches in a row.

He just needs to be in the right state of mind. He needs to be challenged/willing.

He scored again but I can't help think it was very fortuitous .... poor 1st touch and he was lucky to wrap his lanky leg round it.

However, he showed great vision when he was running at the defence, laying the ball of to Jelavic .... the likes of Pavlyuchenko would have blazed the ball into row z.

I'm still sitting on the fence with Mandzukic.

Poor first touch on the goal? I'd say that's a bit harsh:

Being on the fence is fine though. It's not wise to judge players solely based on tournament play.

It wasn't a great first touch. Heck of a recovery/finish though. Pav's first touch would have sent the ball flying out of bounds.

I like the.sound of him but I'm guessing the competition just doubled for his signature. We've had our chance plenty of times before though.

I thought Mandzukic has looked very good so far in the Euros but so has Milan Baros and so many others that fail to produce at the club level when the seem to be able to at the international level. Would not mind him backing up Ade or Leandro at all. We should have plenty of games for him to play with the Europa League being 8,000 games now.

Would 10 million be too much or too little? I would think much more than that is too much for him and too little will not bring him to us with his good play.

You have some very good croatian players, but I think we will look elsewhere in this transfer window. Usually I think we should focus on markets that are not that much in focus at the moment. There are many non internationals out there, who should have been selected for their respective national teams. Most of the squads have restrictions because they have not selected the best available players, actually.

What players would that be?

There are 2-3 that spring to my mind which maybe I would have taken instead of others, but those would mostly be back-up players and not starters. For example for Croatia Petric instead of Kalinic. And Ok lets not include England in this list because of the inability of Hodgson.

But mostly I think the Teams are pretty much the strongest the respective country can bring.

Possible that strikers over-perform in these tournaments due to lack of cohesion in defenses since they don't play together nearly as much as club defenses do.

True, but Mandzukic has also done well at club level. Although they didn't have a great season, Mandzukic was their best/most important player who scored (or assisted on) most of their vital goals (including the season prior, where his goals helped them avoid relegation).

He just needs to stay focused/motivated and cut-out the play-acting/arguing (to referees/teammates) and he'll prove a good purchase for any club. And to his credit, he's done that at these Euros. If anything, I've been most impressed by his attitude (knowing how he can tend to be).

I was really making a general comment in response to the sentiment regarding players who look great in Int'l tourneys but don't live up to expectations for their clubs.

Agreed, as I previously mentioned in this thread. It's silly to judge these players solely based on their tournament performances. Not only will you not (necessarily) get the true picture of them, but you will most likely have to pay over their true value (if they do well).

And I wasn't responding to you directly, but rather just offering more information on the player (for those who may not have been aware of his performances for Wolfsburg).
