Was just thinking the same i.e is Emerson an upgrade on Aurier?
I hope hes less error-prone over the course of a season AND will benefit from Contes coaching but still tbd for now.

He is a slight upgrade in regards to not doing 1 totally stupid action in a game

Surprised by people rating Sanchez's performance so highly. He was played a big part in at least four good Liverpool chances, and one where he was lucky Mane was offside. Him and Emerson were/are massive weaknesses.

Dier (just) for me. I don’t remember him putting a foot wrong in defence and his passing out from the back was outstanding. He’s becoming a really good CB, which could be down to having an actual coach for the first time since he permanently switched to the position. Winks was excellent, best game in years. Dele had everything except the final touch, and Sessegnon played his best game for spurs. If Son and Kane had been on top form we could have scored 5

Totally respect your opinion, plenty have disagreed with mine and that's absolutely fine.
However, despite all the disagrees no one has been able to tell me what he is good at??
I am not writing him off, I know there is an adjustment period, he is young etc etc.
He may well come good, and I hope he does. But, what is he good at? What makes him stand out?
For me, he's pretty big, strong, reasonably quick and seems to read the game quite well. He seems to be quite solid defensively and while his attacking threat needs work, I think he's shown enough to give a chance.
He's only been here a few months.

agree.

gil is also young and new to the team, he's generally struggled in his appearances so far and is way off the physicality and intensity needed to compete in this league but despite that you can see the quality he possesses. he has a lot to work with that makes you think he could become a big player in the future. with emerson though it's essentially the other way around. he's actually settled just fine imo and he's doing a steady job but i don't see a great deal more to come from him, just because he's 22/23 doesn't mean he has big untapped potential.

conte will no doubt improve him but he can't coach him to be as quick as walker, or to dribble like lamptey, or to pass and deliver like alexander-arnold or strike a ball like reece james. these are qualities that you either possess or you don't and emerson has shown me nothing to suggest that he has any of these key attacking attributes. defensively he's been fine for the most part, a few poor moments like yesterday against mane and jota but i think these will be ironed out. as a wing back though i'd rather a player who was shit hot on the ball but has his issues defensively if i had to compromise.

Thanks for the genuine opinion.
Genuine question, have you not just described Doherty?
We already have one of those and he isn't deemed good enough

Not for me, I've still not worked out what Doherty is good at. He's not quick, not strong and can't seem to pass to a team mate 5 yards away.
Plus at what 29 (ish) he doesn't have much chance of improving.

Aurier is such a strange one. Seriously talented player, great athlete, strong, quick, can cross and score goals.

Possessed of the odd brain fart but really not much worse than Kyle Walker was in that area.

Joins Spurs for £24m. Gets played quite a bit by various managers. Wants to leave. Has contract cancelled at huge cost to the club due to no transfer fee despite being obviously our best RB and also better than his replacement.

Joins Villarreal for free and finds himself stuck on the bench behind Foyth.

Just don’t get any of it.

We should never have sold forth imo. Actually, both are better than Royal. As is tripper and obviously walker.

It is a clear example of a crucial position that we have failed to upgrade.
