Completely agree. Reminded me of Poch days when we were in our pomp - we would still drop points in games like this. Most teams do - we aren't anywhere near City/Liverpool levels yet.

Winks alone did enough to get the win - problem was he was on his own. The drop off in PEH's form is alarming. But the rise in Winks offensive passing is as timely as it is surprising.

Nothing to be worried about imo. He just needs rotation and competition. I think hes started all of the last 55 or so league games.

thats not saying much
I agree, mate. The point I was making is that Dele will get slated for that performance, but in the context of the game he was moved from the position he had against Liverpool and was no worse than Højbjerg. I'd also go as far as saying his performance was on a similar level to Reggie, Dier, Royal, Moura and Son.

Winks v good; Sanchez good; Emerson good. Dier: solid as a Rock
Winks, yes, Sanchez impressive. Emerson poor final ball and a tad sloppy. Dier was fine for most of the game though guilty of a few dodgy passes and switched off when Broja was advancing that might have cost us.

PEH, as others have mentioned, is a huge problem right now. I could hardly think of many players in the squad less suited to be a Conte player. The manager demands fluidity and technical ability in midfield and it is hard to see what the Dane brings to the middle of the park. Not a bad player by any stretch but nowhere near what this system needs.

Lloris 7 nothing to do and not at fault for their goal

Emerson 6 solid yet unspectacular
Sanchez 7 same as above, saved dier
Dier 6 barring mistake was fine
Davies 7 solid yet unspectacular
Reguillon 6 rusty/fatigued gave away the ball a bit too often

Hojbjerg 4 WHAT DOES HE OFFER GOING FORWARD?
Winks 8 Fair play, poor first 30 mins and I'm a big critic but 3/4 really good balls forward
Alli 3 Absolutely Hopeless. Outpaced by their CB so I can see why he falls to the floor everytime when he can't do a pointless flick

Son 6 penalty aside, one of those streaky games from him where he is frustrating as hell
Kane 8 MOTM the Kane of old performance, only player who meant we could escape the 1st half press, should have had another goal but for offside and if one of those crosses was actually aimed to him, banked him to score.

Subs
Doherty 7 should be on the right not left
Moura 6 offered nothing
Gil 6 looked dangerous at times but too rusty to take advantage

Conte 3 This was so winnable, far too Conservative, didn't use the squad well, Ndombele should have been in at CM and even Gil at LWB instead of Doherty AND NO DELLE ALLI!

I gave it to Kane.

I thought Winks was poor in the first 30 minutes and very nearly cost us at one point. He put some great balls in after that and was probably our best player, but Kane had a solid game and deserved a second goal so I went with him. Dier also did well up until the brain fart at the death.

Hojbjerg comfortably our worst player with Reguilon and Dele both average/poor.

We really missed Skipp in the first 30 minutes - he holds that midfield together at times.

I'm getting so frustrated by SOME of our fans plus the commentators and pundits who continuously say how poor we are and how incredible the opposition have been based purely and simply on possession.

It is so clear that this is the Conte system at the moment. We sit deep and invite pressure and then catch them on the counter attack.

It was exactly the same today. People will say it was a really poor first half and Southampton dominated blah blah blah. Whilst I'm not saying it was executed perfectly today, the plan was carried out. They scored a goal out of nothing that was a good hit. Apart from that, Hugo had absolutely zero to do for all the Southampton possession. We were unlucky/poor with a couple of final balls that IF we had got right, we could have been 2-0 up. That's the way Conte plays.

In the 2nd half, once the game had changed, it was always going to be difficult. For any side playing against 10 men sitting deep behind the ball it is hard to break down. Having said that, we scored 2 perfectly good goals and if it had finished 3-1 like it should, nobody would be complaining.

As for ratings, nobody was really poor and nobody brilliant. Winks passing is decent but he still wants to take too long on the ball. This is where an upgrade is most needed.

Clearest rating for me was Taylor and VAR = -300.

Winks is the only one who can see a pass. Apart from the moment he got caught on the ball he played very well. Would like to see him and Skipp start

moment? He was caught twice fannying about with the ball on the edge of our box, once in the first half and then again in the 2nd half.

He was alright today, nothing Earth shattering. We also need to remember we were ‘supposedly’ playing against 10 men meaning our central midfield was under ‘zero’ pressure for the 2nd half.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s improved his performances compared to pre Conte but he along with Hojbjerg are not good enough to be starters. Skipp has been our only standout midfielder this season. The rest are either not good enough or not up to the task.

Winks and Kane the only ones to come out of that with any credit. The rest were 6’s at best.

Ref gets 4.

Funny how many view things so differently.

After a slow start, in which Southampton were fouling their way through spurs, we Statred to get a grip. Can't leave JwP unmarked like that though.

First half wasn't attractive, but on the whole spurs were a much better side. In some ways, playing against 10 men playing for a draw was never going to favour spurs looking to catch a team on the break.

Knocked on the door, in my opinion had 2 legit goals ruled out. But my main criticism was the first touch was off on many players. Was too much lingering and not releasing it quickly enough.

Players of note:
I thought Winks, despite what many were saying, had a superb game. Couple of errors on the back foot but overall thumbs up.

Thought Royal had an off game going forwards, not a lack of effort but he needs to work on it.

Reguillon
Needs to mature.

Dele
Anonymous. Didn't impose himself like son did. Even though son, for me, had an off game in terms of first touch he is always a menace. Dele, sadly, nothing. That I noticed anyway.

Doherty
Was actually alright in the build up play but woeful shooting.

A solid performance against a side that can on its day, play well. Robbed by poor officiating.

Winks MoM. Even when he got caught with the ball, he quickly redeemed himself by poking it clear from the attacking player and the ball got cleared.

In addition, young Gil was taking some flack in the match thread. Not sure why? He was pretty energetic and forced a brilliant save from their keeper. I still think he'll be a very good player given minutes and coaching.

Lol. He played at least 6 key passes. 4 of those in the first half when they had 11 - he was the reason they went down to ten and we equalised because of his superb ball in behind. He also played an inch perfect pass for a perfectly good goal by Kane second half.

He's the reason we were even in the game. His balls. His progression.

When he got caught "fannying about" as you put it - he was actually trying to find a progressive pass but no one was moving for him. What would you have said if he'd just hoofed back to them? Dug him out yet again of course :banghead: In the end he recovered his own mistake - unlike several others.

Sorry this is such a ridiculous take. It's embarrassing - I'd expect of a gooner on a wind up but you're supposed to be spurs. what a fucking joke. Winks for all his faults put in an incredible display at CM today. One of the best we've seen from a Spurs player in that position for years. It was 90 minutes of effort and progression and constant pass and move. No hiding - all responsibility.

Fucking ridiculous post mate. give your head a fucking wobble if you can't acknowledge a good game of football by a spurs player.
