Apparently they paid about £25m for him. Bargain. We should have been in then.

Maybe they activated some kind of option to buy with the intention of profiting from it?

I agree, if they had a low value clause (as per Toby a few years ago) they could easily plan to activate and then sell for profit immediately. I wouldn't be happy paying the reported £70m if they paid just £25m a few months ago but, surely they would accept £40-50m for a quick turnover on their investment. Lots of twitter on this and talk of Barca interested too.

On Kovacic - if he is unhappy we should definitely be talking to Madrid to find out what sums would be involved. As for de ja vu, Kovacic is Real's number 23, we once purchased a player from Madris with the same number.......VDV

It was and I think they work hard to maintain that reputation but it's been 4 years or so since they really blew their budget to sign some superstars. I don't think they are the financial force they used to be. Could be wrong.
Didn't they just buy 2 teenagers from Brazil for like 70 mil or something?

Annoying there is no Kondogbia thread. I would much rather offer 50+ for NDombele. The most natural Dembele replacement there seems to be

How much credit is there in the Kondogbia link?

I don’t think we could of got him this summer. He was loaned by Valencia with that set fee to be paid at the end of the loan to make it permanent, which they did. So we missed him last summer and not this. But then I don’t think we were after CMs

We were after Ross Barkley and Andre Gomes last summer.

I am not sure it was a compulsory buy option as nothing was every 'triggered' by his playing time. I follow Valencia and always heard it as a option to buy at a pre-established price. And there were Spurs' links to him in January. If you know of different feel free to educate me.

Kovacic is one of very few players who could restore a bit of faith in our transfer dealings this window. I have a miniscule amount of optimism left in all honesty.

Where did I say it was compulsory?

It just makes so much sense for all parties involved. Kovacic is surplus to requirements for Real, he's won a ton of trophies and now he wants to play week in and week out.

We don't know that Kovacic is viewed as surplus by Real Madrid. Zidane has gone and they have a brand new coach, who has yet to select a team for a competitive match.

Yes, we can assume that Casemiro, Kroos and Luka are first choice. But three midfielders won't get them through the season, and it may be that Lopetegui sees Kovacic as first rotation option, with the hope that he can replace Modric in time.

Wow, that's a nasty reply. I didn't say you did say it was compulsory but you did say:

I don’t think we could of got him this summer. He was loaned by Valencia with that set fee to be paid at the end of the loan to make it permanent, which they did.

As the Valencia option wasn't baked in the cake then the possibility remained for us to get him this summer. It was a option to buy not a compulsory or triggered mandatory option was all I was saying. And the 'educate me' remark was truly sincere as in disabuse me of my ignorance so I don't go spouting off BS any longer. But if you feel that warrants such a reply then so be it.
