Veltman and Ginter are both right sided CB's who are adept at also playing RB. In Poch's system, there's a huge emphasis on the wider CB's to cover the play behind the advancing full backs, which is why Jan, Toby and Dier are good, because they have experienced playing fullback as well as centre back. The key to this is the fact the CB's must be on their natural side, hence you don't see Jan playing RCB in a 3, or Dier/Toby playing LCB in a 3. When Jan got injured, Wimmer played LCB, but when he looked uncomfortable, we moved to a back 4, and Toby moved over, but since the fullbacks sit deeper, there's less emphasis on the CB pulling wider, so Toby being on the left was not so much of an issue.
This is where the need for LCB rather than RCB is important, losing Jan to injury/suspension etc, we don't want to have to change our system due to not having like for like players. If Dier is out, Carter-Vickers is naturally a right sided CB so can slot straight in.

I get that we appear to be looking at defenders who can replace Walker but have the versatility to play centrally, but equally is I'm puzzled about the absence of cover for Jan should Wimmer leave in search of more game time.

Think you answered your question earlier --- BD is going to become cover for Jan.

Think my slight preference is for Sessegnon and Veltman (+KWP) over Sessegnon and Ginter (+KWP) but it is a close call

Tottenham enters Ginter Poker

Twisted Tottenham Matthias Ginter (23) head?

Actually, the transfer between the BVB defender and league rival Hoffenheim was as good as fixed. The players and the club were unanimous. But now it's time for Hoffenheim ...

According to BILD, two Tottenham spies were on the stands in the German national team on Tuesday in Denmark (1: 1), watching the national team. His appearance seemed to have fallen, so they contacted Ginter's consultant immediately afterwards.

Is a change for Ginter at all meaningful?

Under former coach Thomas Tuchel (43) the defender was set, made in the season 42 compulsory games. However, with Ömer Toprak (28/12 million from Leverkusen) already an interior defender for the new season was committed, Ginter thinks about farewell. A top club of the Premier League is quite attractive.

At Tottenham (Vizemeister in England), he would easily double his salary of about 3.5 million euros per year and also play in the Champions League. Dortmund could also make cash. In the event of a transfer of 20 million euros, the BVB would let him pull by 2019 despite the contract.

The fact is, before Ginter decides, he wants to find a conversation with Dortmund's new boss Peter Bosz (53). But first he traveled with the national team to the Confed Cup to Russia.

Perhaps Ginter can even increase its market value even further.

I'm more concerned they think he will get double his wages. If my calculations are correct that's around 120k per week for a defender who won't be first choice
That detail makes the whole story suspect to me, no way we'd splash out those kind of wages to Ginter.

Said similar on the Veltman thread, either Veltman or Ginter would be ideal. Able to slot in at RB in competition with Trippier now Walker has gone, but equally able to cover CB in a back 3, with Walker-Peters stepping into the squad as RWB alternative option.

Davies and Sessegnon would offer the same option on the left behind Rose. If/when Davies has to cover over at LCB, Sessegnon slots in as cover behind Rose.

Only issue is, if Wimmer goes, we'd still need added cover. At RCB we'd have Ginter/Veltman, Carter-Vickers, Dier and Alderweireld. At LCB we'd only have Vertonghen and Davies.

Ideally
RB. Trippier, Ginter/Veltman, Walker-Peters
LB. Rose, Davies, Sessegnon
RCB. Dier, Carter-Vickers, (Ginter/Veltman)
CB. Alderweireld, (Dier)
LCB. Vertonghen, Wimmer, (Davies)

Plenty of scope there to move players around to suit, Dier and Ginter can cover Wanyama, and Walker-Peters & Sessegnon could slot on higher up the pitch if need be.

Two signings, covered combined by Walkers fee.

What about the rb on loan at nice?
I got the impression he was our no 1 choice to replace walker

Pity, if what JJ says ends up true, as he looks like a very good fit for our system. Seems similar to Dier, Toby and Jan. Which sort of explains why Wimmer has struggled, as he's not like those three in terms of his playing style. So you can see why Poch doesn't fully trust him.

I'm not one to doubt JJ at all. Just hope he's wrong on this guy, as he'd be an excellent signing.
