Not too worried about an auction itself. There is a natural market ceiling for the fee, regardless of how many clubs are interested, the absolute ceiling stays more or less the same and Tottenham would come extremely close to said ceiling IMO. What worries me is that in recent interviews, the player doesn't seem to be mention Tottenham among major clubs he'd be flattered by.

Has he been asked? The last I saw was the Juventus one, where he was specifically asked about them.

Has to be de Ligt or Alderweireld stays for me.

Let's not kid ourselves, a fit and firing Toby is a thing of beauty, de Ligt was always intended as a Toby replacement not as an initial upgrade.

Hopefully the recent itk sees Toby forgiven, back towing the line and the best CB pairing in the Prem smash it up once more.

What I have seen are quotes containing a handful of clubs. Happy to be proven that he himself has actively mentioned Tottenham.

That's what I mean. He's mentioned those clubs because he was asked:

"Who would I choose between Juve, Barcelona and United? It's difficult, they're all great teams"

For example.

If Ajax are indeed trying to play everyone off against each other to raise the price it's probably best for all clubs involved to take a step back. If we are indeed the player's first choice we are probably best to lurk in the shadows until they settle with someone on a price.

Sorry for not wanting one of the top young CBs in the world but isn't it a bit of overkill? We spent a lot on Davinson (21 years old) last year and everyone is happy with him, we beat PSG to signing Foyth (20 years old) who has looked promising when we've seen him, Jan who is one of the best centre halves in the league and then in the academy from what we know we have Tanganga (19 years old) who is an established England U19 international and then others. Add to this Eric Dier (24 years old) who has played god knows how many games at centre half for us.

Do we really need to add another young player to this mix in De Ligt (18 years old) or is the answer a more established player (23-27 years old) who doesn't need to start every game?

I personally would go with the latter, especially as I suspect it would save us £15m+.

Title challengers always go for the best available talent.

Mid-table squads go for the player "who doesn't need to start every game"

If Verts twists his ankle or gets sent off again next season, who is going to fill in if we want to play 3 at the back? Dier can be horrid in defence as much as he can be good.

Surely City want de Ligt as a replacement for the ageing Kompany. I'm sure we could offer him more game time playing in a 3.

Don’t want to ask Herc questions because it’s also frowned upon to ask about ITK but very curious if we are posturing or the bidding has gotten beyond our comfort level. If it starts going into the €60m-€70m range, hard to see us seeing it through. Pessimistic maybe but that’s my opinion.

Ageing/injury-prone Kompany plus I don't think Pep rates John Stones particularly and if you wanna throw in there the fact Otamendi will be 31 this season, could see it happening.

We need de Ligt. It's irrelevant if age. He is ready.
