I pretty much hate anyone who acts as though the achievements of a football team are in some way releated to their own life. It just so happens that this is the case with many Arsenal fans.

I know many Arsenal fans, most are nice people, although many are somewhat arrogant and obnoxious when discussing footballing matters but this is the same with anyone who adopts such a stance regarding their football team.

I am all for banter and discussion, too many fans these days turn footballing discussion in to something with more edge then it need be (which is moronic in my eyes)

It is those people who act as though they have made some type of personal achievement when their teams wins or are in some way 'better' then the next person based on what a group of eleven men do or don't do on a football pitch that annoys me somewhat.

For example I was once in a bar with my family including my mum, dad, aunty, uncle and girlfriend (all of whom are Spurs 'fans' to varying extents) and there was an Arsenal supporter standing next to us (as we watched the SPurs/Arsenal game) screaming very loud and insulting remarks about Spurs and anyone who supported them.

I am certainly not one to get into fights over a football match, and generally I enjoy banter amoung fans but there is a differnce between banter and being rude/crude and insulting, I had to take this Arsenal fan to the side and basically threaten phiscial violence against him if he did not tone down his mouth as I did not appreicate what he was saying (in my opinion) to the members of my family (he was at times looking straight at us and we were wearing sPurs clothing, so reasonable to take the abuse personally)

He then left the bar and I assume went somewhere else, but he was a foul mouthed fool and people like him bring disgrace on football in my opinion (not that I want everyone to watch the game in perfect silence, nor do I tar all Arsenal fans with his brush)

I actually wish all fans could sit side by side and take the piss out of each other but enjoy the game with no hints of violence or even tension. The game would be much better off if this was the case I feel.

I know loads of Arsenal fans aswell and on the whole they're a nice bunch just colour blind. Only time they fuck me off is when they start to talk football, people say spurs fans are deluded. Along with West Ham fans (we won the world cup) they spout the most shit out of any other football fans.

Agreed with everything you said with one caveat. The problem is that I feel so good when we win and so horrendous when we lose that clearly the achievements of Spurs are in some way related to my own life - just not a reflection on me. In addition, I have been living out of London for years now and all my peers identify me with Spurs very closely. People occasionally just refer to me as "Spurs". I take pride in that.

I think that tension will always be there between full-blooded fans but it's the reaction to the tension that's the key - taking the piss is part of it. Anger management.

Ultimately, "glory-hunters" identify themselves so closely with a team's performance because they are so unhappy with their own miserable existence. I identify with my team's performance because of family and local pride. I'm happy with that.

Oh don't get me wrong, feeling the highs and lows of the team you support is what makes supporting a team worth while. If you don't have passion for the club you support you might as well not support them at all.

But it is common place for many a football fan to act is if the achievements of the club they support or in someway evidence of success for themselves on a personal level. (mostly people with little other then football in their life I would imagion)

There's a gooner fan that lives near me. I've never met him but have seen his car parked with a gooner sticker on it. Twice now (over three years) I've scribbled 'Wanker' over his sticker (he replaced the first one). I haven't seen his car for a while but I have a marker pen in my car ready...

When we played the semi v's the arse 1991 the pub i drank in was split 3 ways West Am, The Arse and The Mights Spurs. on that day all the West Am boys were at the Forest game and all the Arse and Spurs (about 50 of us) got the train to Liverpool St together all mates, at this point both sets went their own ways to Wembley. After the game it was all back to the local for friendly banter which was given and taken in good faith as it should be.
That night no one can say i didnt feel smug, i did and i loved every min of it. On top of that if it had been The Arse that come out on top i would have expected them to be exactly the same.
What i'm saying is i dont hate goons because they support the club i just hate the club they support.

The first Goon I met was a boy by the name of Stuart Ede, if memory serves. He was 6 foot 2 at the age of 11, ginger and freckley. He was the most ungainly footballer but caused havoc due to his size. Frequently scored. He went on to be quite good at golf.

Thankfully he's dead now.

Good Lord, how did he die?

I know a fair few Gooners and have a few Gooner mates, and to be fair, when it's not match day we get on really well...match days we don't speak. We can't. It's just the way it is. I become irrational and I'm sure they do too, plus let's be honest, you DO NOT want to be with 'them' post-match as someone always has to hold back/be polite, which is NOT what it should be about the moments after a big result. Thus a 24 hour 'composure' period ensues and then we all toddle on our merry ways being nice to each other again LOL...

I work two goons, one used to play for them and spurs in his youth (about 30ish years ago) and always says he should have stayed at Spurs he loves a bit of banter.

The other one is a real prick not just about football but in general. I loved it when we stuffed em 5-1 last season I really pissed on his chips when I asked him for the time at 12.55.
