Mixed feelings about Keane deal

Read with interest the 5 year deal Robbie Keane has signed. While I acknowledge how well he has played I feel that resolving his position will probably hasten the exit of Defoe from Spurs. Like many on here I have been a supporter of JD and if the truth be known was often wishing that Keane would be taken off to allow him more than the standard 10 minutes. Good on Keane for rising to the challenge and lifting us to 5th again. Personally I believe that the partnership story with Berbatov was over-rated.....I saw no natural conection in their play. Of course they both got 20 odd goals but this was no Gilly and Greaves revisited. I'm probably in a minority but feel we signed the wrong one to a deal for 5 years because I can't see Keane being our future.

It is not just the link up play with Berbatov, but also the general intelligence of Keane's play that I suspect Jol likes.

Watching some of last season's games again, against Cardiff, Bolton and Boro Keane shows excellent movement to find space in the box to score goals. He also does a lot of good link-up play by dropping deeper to pick up the ball.

I'd love to see Defoe stay and hope he does, but I can understand why Keane - who ended the season with something like 13 goals in 14 games - gets the nod at the moment.

Keane is definitely our future and we are his. I, on the other hand, cant see what JD can do to help us improve our position

Defoe, prior to arriving at Spurs, would have been brought up to understand that he has a great future and would be an integral part of a team pushing for honours.

Well the world moves on. His talent has brought him to the forefront fo his trade - he is in England squads and is and integral component of a fresh young team that promotes youth.

He has to accept that in today's honour chasing squads, every player handed a number is vital to the challenge, a real team ethic that relies on the sum of all parts.

He would inevitably be a hero somewhere else, but then that's why Bent is presently valued at more than Defoe, as a consequence of big fidsh in small pond. JD should concentrate on accepting the modern concept of glory chasing and work to that effect.

Very well put PT, it now remains to be seen whether he can accept playing a lesser role for a team really going places. If he were to leave Spurs, he would by no means be guaranteed any first team football at any of the teams above us, nor guaranteed any greater chance of success at a team below us. Of course the England problem may push him into the latter option to get maximum exposure, but that could backfire as he may be simply not rated by those in the England setup.

5 years only take him to 31 so why be worried? By then Pekhart and co will be banging them in for us

Wow. Do you always take good news so badly? We have a top player extend his contract, if we don't want him we can sell him for more, there is no down side!

I’m not sure exactly what some people expect from Keane before he can be accepted at Spurs by them.

Keane is great! He is one of our only vocal players on the pitch. Although he really isn't that old he is vastly experienced now and has been with us for 5 years putting in good displays. He deserves his new contract. Whilst I agree his partnership with Berbatov wasn't really clicking to begin with, they both seemed to be adapting toward the end of the season and I for one am looking forward to seeing it continue to develop and flourish.

I thought the Berbatov-Keane partnership was over rated too, but near the end of the season you could see the two players were looking for each other because they knew they could both make something happen.

I'm a big Defoe fan, and I really hope he stays, but I think that Keane is perhaps more critical to Spurs breaking the top 4 than Defoe is.

And if Keane signing a long term deal can help to get Berbatov to sign a longer deal then I am all for it.

Cant See the problem as far as Defoe is concerned .We have three top rated strikers and whilst we may start with Berbs and Keane there is no guarantee that this will remain the top partnership. If you could find a third striker who will deliver 19+ goals a season then will be wiling to listen to argument to get rid of Defoe .Until then what we need is a fourth striker sub for Berbs. if he is injured, this may or may not be Bent.

Robbie Keane has been in double figures in the ol' goal tally every season he's been with us.

Which is why I will use this smiley ---> :hump: <--- to show my love for him.

I fucking love Robbie Keane.

Robbie has been awesome this season and he's a more skillful striker than defoe, tho defoe is more lethal keane can make a goal out of half chances, hopefully we can keep both but keane (IMO) is a better player than defoe, teamwise

Robbie Keane & Ledley King are the two players who kept me sane between 2002 & 2005

I honestly dont beleive the Keane Berby partnership is over-rated, for the past 3 months at least they have been playing some superb football and scoring almost freely, what else can we ask from them? How about Joint players of the month? Oh they accomplished that too!

I'll second Stoof's :hump:

Defoe just has to take a leaf out of Robbies book, head down, work hard for the team and the goals will come. JD started more games & played more minutes on the pitch again last season (i think) than Robbie so he can have no complaints. I hope he stays and fulfills his potential with THFC as I reckon we need them both, but only time will tell...

How so? He's had twice as many chances as Keane this season and last.

the fact he can just blast the ball from about 30 yards out and get it in, where as keane works for the goals

i think we might find Keane scored more long range shots than Defoe last season

both Defoe and Keane work for there goals at times, both can aslo make a goal scoring chance out of what looks like a dead situation (though i would say Keane can create better, but defoe gets into the scoring opotunites more)
