As opposed to having a very attack minded midfielder furthest back?
I get the feeling people we have been given a very skewed view of Modric throughout these championships due to Bilic playing him further back.

as quoted in my original post i said give him a licence to roam as he has for croatia , him jj and zoko would give us a solid wall. we were far too weak defending last term so to play an ozzie formation as m1llion suggestion would be madeness.

i agree with him keane and berba were magic but do we continue to score loads and concede just as many or do we try and solidate our defence

That would be the team that I would play.

I asked Dan A. about Tainio. He pointed out that Ramos favours having better players out of position rather than inferior players in their natural position - he pointed out that Tainio and Lee were the major casualties of this.

It's still the team I would play.

Sorry but how is this an Ozzie team exactly? And since when has a Juande Ramos team ever played that way? All midfielders would work hard to win the ball back. Modric plays his part defensively aswell. In fact, this team is stronger defensively as a unit then the Spurs team from last season. How? Because Tainio is a defensive midfielder. Zokora is not disciplined for the role of a defensive midfielder, and Jenas is better going forward than defending. Thats why they cant play together.

This team would not leak goals because, as i said, Ramos doesn't set his team out that way. Its no less defensive than the Sevilla team Ramos had, as far as personel go.

Anyway, sorry if i offended but it just bugs me everytime i see a team with just one striker and no Robbie Keane. He's one of few great players we have right now and theres no way we should drop him.

When needed or to give guys a rest Dos Santos can fill in for either Lennon or Modric in midfield and for Keane when we want to play a 4-5-1

Steed to be first off the bench as he can play anywhere except for Zokora. I think we are going to miss Steed more than people want to let on next year but Modric and Dos Santos didn't come here to play in the reserves or sit on the bench.

Now if we were to bring in Bently a goalkeeper and a def. midfielder before the summer is up I will be more than happy to change this lineup as it isn't good enough as it is right now to break into the top 4.

Have you actually been paying attention to the way Ramos sets his team out? This is basically a 4-4-2 formation i've set out. Maybe you're confused because i put Tainio further back? Yeah, thats to indicate the fact that he's the defensive midfielder. What makes you think the other 3 midfielders wont defend though? He has his wide players working hard to defend when they dont have the ball. So nothing will change there. Modric will play in the centre and will defend when needed. Its not hard to figure out. How on earth you can call this Ozzie tactics, when clearly Ramos has his team set out in a totally different way, is beyond me. The fact is, this midfield would work as a unit under Ramos. Theres no gung ho attacking football involved. If you cant figure out that Lennon, Modric and Giovani would defend when we dont have the ball, instead of staying upfield and leave Tainio all alone, then sorry but i cant help you.

Fantasy formations are all very well, and good fun, but nothing to do with what we're actually likely to see in practice.

When Ramos took over at Sevilla one of his first acts was to switch to 4-4-2 from Caparros' 3-5-2. This is well-documented. He's shown no inclination to depart from 4-4-2 as a starting formation since.

Playing a single striker up front means that two of the others will be pissed-off rather than one. It won't happen.

The buzzword 4-2-3-1 is a fancy way of saying 4-5-1. It's a matter of semantics.

We don't know how Modric will be used until we have the rest of the midfield sorted. Discussion is therefore pretty pointless.
