We have a good squad now, but we need a couple of more players. I just hope we can keep Kaboul, KPB and Berbatov. I am unsure if we should keep Bent, but that depends if we can manage to get a world class striker as replacement.

Players like Lee, Rocha, Gardner, Ghaly, Tainio, Robinson could leave, I think. They also speak about Chimbonda leaving, but we should not sell him for cheap, as he is a good player for us.

I want Lennon to stay aswell.

Diego Capel would be a good left sided option for us. Gomes as our new goalkeeper, would be great, I think.

Exciting times ahead also this season.

Do you read the thread titles before posting your repetitive crap? What has anything you have written got to do with Modric or formations?

If we keep everything constant, then unless Lennon is unbelievable in pre-season, I'd leave him out and field the following:

.....................Robbo
Hutton Woodgate King/Dawson Bale
..............Jenas......Zokora
....................Modric
.......Keane.................GDS
................Berbatov

JJ did improve a lot defensively last season and so i think having him behind modric but giving him license to bomb forward to provide options and removing the responsibilities on him of being the main creative outlet of our midfield (whilst zokora covers) would benefit JJ a lot. I also think it would be quite strong as JJ and Modric have a lot of energy and don't mind putting in a tackle or two.

Zokora performs better when he has less responsibility other than to just break up play, and that will leave Modric to control the tempo and spread the play.

Finally, it would allow us to defend as a 451, but attack as a 433 or even more if Modric and JJ get forward too.

Only question is whether playing GDS up front will disturb the Keane-Berbatov partnership?

If I was Juande, I'd try to get the team playing in a similar system to how Villa have played this season. However, I think we'll play 442.

--------------------------Robbo--------------------------

--Hutton-------Woody------------King-----------Bale-----

----------------Jenas------------Modric------------------

------Lennon-----------------------------dos Santos-----

-----------------Keano----------Berba-------------------

JJ needs to be replaced by a world class DM ASAP. Then we will have the option to move Luka onto the wing and play JJ with the DM which will make the team more solid for away games.

MON's switched between 4-3-3 and 4-4-2, but without going through every Torygraph match report for last season I couldn't tell you which he's employed more. And guess what?

I think Jenas and Zokora will really have to fight for a starting place next season. Like I posted on the other thread, Steed could also find a new niche for himself as back-up DM. If we are playing Modric in the middle we definitely need an enforcer alongside him—somehow I don't see JJ in that role.

Why is everyone assuming Bale, not Gilberto, at LB?

Cos' Bale's the dogs unmentionables and Gilberto's Brazils' answer to Timothee Atouba.

Defo need an enforcer to play alongside Modric in the middle. Rolfes looks tasty. The thread said if we had to start the season now thought so I think i'd go for JJ. Thinking about it now though I'd be tempted to give the Hudd a shot, him and Modric could work well together.

That's the way I'd like it. Even if Berbs went I think we'd see a lot of goals for Bent and Keane through rotation. Bent has proven in the Premier League already that lone striker suits him just fine.

Unless Bale's tackling and defensive positioning massively improve over the summer he's not ready for first-choice LB yet.

I'd go for Steed over JJ or the Hudd, bearing in mind that he can actually tackle. But as the season isn't starting for almost two months and we're certainly going to be getting new players in it's all a bit pointless.

I dont think Bale's that bad defensively, I'm pretty sure he'll be our first choice left back next season.

I think if Juande was going to try Steed in CM he would have done it in the last few games of the season when we had nothing to lose. Steed's natural instinct is to attack so I cant see him adapting to a defensive position all that well, especially considering he's no youngster. I'd love to see O'Hara develop into a regular starter in CM, I just wish he was a bit bigger and stronger. Him and Modric would get bullied by the likes of Chelsea.

Fairly sure Bale will be first choice too. Let's face it we had Chimbonda playing right back and he hasn't got a clue how to defend. I'm still waiting for him to learn how to stop a cross coming into the box. We haven't yet seen Bale in a stable team, the fact that everything in front of him was a complete shambles last year when he played didn't help. If he just keeps his defending simple, i.e. stop the cross coming in and keep the defensive shape I'll be more than happy. Thats all I want from our fullbacks, they don't need to be Paolo Maldini. Just stop the cross anyway possible.

I'd just like to add to that by playing with a DM will help massively, as the number of times at the beginning of last season teams were able to play in the space between our midfield and defence was silly. At times throughout the season when we pushed the same can be said. I still see us playing 442 'SSDP' formation, with a new keeper, new DM and possibly new RM.

Not convinced Gilberto will jst be left by the wayside, I'm confident he will start next season @ LB & Bale will be bedded in over the course fo the season.

I love how people have written him off already though.

I havemt written Gilberto off. The Atouba thing was just a joke. I think he looks much more comfortable at LM than LB though. Maybe we'll play with Gilberto and JJ at LM and RM tucking in so the full backs have more room to get forward.

I still don't think we have a better option for LM than Bale, and I'm still convinced that's where he'll end up playing.

Obviously it will depend on who else we sign. If we sign Capel then theres no way Bale will play left midfield. I still think Bale is the perfect fullback for Ramos, because of his ability driving forward, and his energy to get up and down that side. It will also dependly largely on whether Giovani starts on the left, or if we start him on the bench and bed him in. If Giovani starts on the left wing, then we'll need to play Gilberto for his experience. It will be especially useful for communication on that side early on. The though of Bale and Giovani on the left (or even Capel) would concern me early on. Howver, as the season progresses, i think Bale and Giovani would be the best players for the left side.

We also have to bear in mind the fact that Bale has only just recovered from injury. No amount of pre-season is likely to get him to full match fitness. Gilberto had a good finish to the season and regained fitness. Plus he's played in the World Cup qualifiers, so he would be the best option early on.

I was very interested in the Germany v Croatia game to see how he got on against Ballack, and an overall more physical side, he did better than I thought he would, tbh.

Obviously, also bringing a Mikel or Essien into the equation would make a difference but that's where a player like Modric is so dangerous in my opinion, he's a player that would limit the effect a player like Essien would have in a game. Instead of being able to just get forward the majority of the time he would have to keep one eye on Luka, a player that I'd imagine would be a nightmare to man-mark.

If Lennon can improve his movement off the ball we're gonna be a hard team to contain next year.

If we don't buy a DM then Modric will be playing wide left with most likely Jenas and Zokora in CM and Dos Santos or Lennon wide right. I can't imagine Ramos not playing Berbatov and Keane up front and we don't have the personnel to effectively play 4-2-3-1 so 4-4-2 it is.

In terms of new signings, I think Modric can handle the physical aspect of the game as we have seen in the Euros but he would need to have an imposing CM (Albelda, Palombo, Veloso) alongside him or we will get brushed aside in the middle of the park by a lot of teams.

I would be very surprised if we didn't bring in at least 2 CM's by the start of the season along with a centre back and at least 1 goalkeeper. If we can get Bentley in then all well and good for the creativity it will give us but it would be great if we could bring in Albelda and Velso and start being a bit more solid in midfield.

I'm sorry but I dont see how Modric can be clased as a DM, the best part of his game is his creativity, little inticate passes and defence splitting balls as well as getting forward to support the strikers. Now I know you will say Carrick's best atributes were passing etc but they are 2 very different players and imo there is no way in the world Modric will ever be used as a DM....

Modric looked capable of playing from deep but was far more effective playing in the Fabregas role.
