Modric vs Moutinho

Assuming Luka goes and Moutinho comes in, do people think that it is like for like, better or a downgrade. I really don't know a lot about Moutinho but I see his goalscoring record is about the same as Modric so there's no improvement there.

Any thoughts?

well it's a downgrade but the best we could hope for, he will make the centre a little more solid though without losing too much rhythm so could in turn give our other attacking players a little more freedom.

It's undoubtedly a downgrade, but I think it's time that we cashed in on Modric so I'll be happy with it as long as we get good deals on both players. Anything in excess of £35m for Modric, and anything under £22m for Moutinho will do me.

It will always be a downgrade or Madrid would be trying to sign Moutinho and not Modric.

I still laugh at the suggestion Dembele is anywhere near the standard we require.

Moutinho is coming in to play in a 4-3-3....Modric was playing in two man central midfield for the majority of the time.

Its not a like for like comparison because of the different team shape.

We could well be a better side because of the new system with Moutinho in it....that doesn't mean he's the better player, he isn't....but its all about plucking the right pieces for the jigsaw.....and he's certainly a good fit for the way AVB will be setting up.

Modric is (was) the lynchpin of the side. He's irreplaceable in that respect. But with a new manager and a new system in place it hopefully shouldn't effect us too much. Moutinho ain't exactly a bad replacement even though it isn't a like for like replacement.

To the OP, there is quite a lot of debate on this issue in the Moutinho thread of the Transfer Rumours forum in case you haven't seen it...

AVB 4-3-3 system is tailor made for Modric which is way he tried so hard to get him at Chelski. I think Levy should reject all bids again like he did last offseason.
Modric didn't sulk last season and still maintained his high level of consistency and team performances.

Moutinho is a clear downgrade and I really don't think he is worth 31m release clause. The most I would pay is 15m.

From what I've seen of Moutinho I'd absolutely love to sign him

Will be a downgrade though :(

Modric is different gravy

Theyre different type players though so don't be surprised if Moutinho assists more and more of our goals come through him than modric

He won't dictate the tempo like Modric did though :( and we won't get someone like Modric again :(

AVB knows the system and he's obviously knows a bit about what 'kind' of players to deploy in each position. From what I've seen, Moutinho is not as good a player as Modric, but he looks like an obvious choice to fit into a familiar system in which he's already very effective.

Modric is a close to irreplaceable as you can get. Just need to buy a player who will fit better into a different formation and hope the team doesn't miss out too much.

Yeah modric is far better than moutinho (who is still very good) and is a slightly different sort player as well. Being honest though, we have been really lucky to have him at spurs and he deserves to be playing for a team like madrid so fair play to him.

Moutinho who wants to play for AVB >>>> Modric who wants to leave the club

Modric is the better player but if we can get Moutinho and Oscar for the money Madrid pay for Modric then we'll have the better deal

Modric has had 4 years with us, good luck to him at Madrid

There are some reports that Spurs will struggle to stump up the £30m asking price for Mourtinho (and rightly so as I believe he's not worth quite that much).

So what other alternatives are out there?

Would a £20m offer get Cabaye?

Moutinho will not cost more than £ 20 M

why not VDV to replace modric in a three man midfield which could in effect be a 4 2 3 1 formation
